May 29, 1926 WINNETKA "TALK RAVINIA STARS COMING TO NORTH SHORE HOMES Several of the Artists Are En- route to Take Up Abodes Near Scene of Operas If all the personal visits could be followed up and all the telephone calls made by the members of the Ravinia club of the Ravinia opera company could be broadcasted an amazing ac- tivity would be revealed, for the north shore towns are fairly humming with the annual subscription ticket cam- paign made by the club members. At the weekly meeting of the chair- men held at the Moraine hotel, High- land Park, last Thurday the majority of the reports showed that the work is quite well in advance of that of a vear ago, and the enthusiasm is wax- ing apace. Although the opening concert is a month away, the singers are making their preparations of starting for Ra- vinia and some of them have arranged for homes not far from the park dur- ing the season. Giovanni Martinelli who is to be one of the Ravinia stars this summer, is here for the North Shore Festival where he sang Thursday evening. Af- ter his Evanston engagement he will immediately dash off for Italy where he has a lovely villa, a charming wife and several children, the youngest little Martinelli being just a tiny infant. Af- ter a brief visit he will return to Ra- vinia. Lucrezia Bori who has been in Paris will sing in Baden Baden before coming to this country, Elizabeth Rethberg, Luella Melius, Florence Macbeth and Alice Gentle are now in this country and will arrive soon to take up their summer domicile. Mario Chamlee is in Milan, Edward Johnson is taking a brief rest before engaging in his summer work, Guisep- pe Danise is motoring from New York, Gennaro Papi is in Havana, Mario Basiola is near by, Armando Agnini is already at work as stage director get- ting things in shape for the opening and Louis Hasselmans will arrive soon. Mr. and Mrs. Jacques Gordon and their infant son will arrive in Highland Park June 25 and will be at 337 Cen- tral avenue, in that city. Others of the musicians, directors, as well as the stars and chorus will soon be assembling from various points of the compass, and there will be a glori- ous opening of the season Saturday evening, June 26. One of the interesting features of the season's entertainment is that of the Thursday afternoon children's con- certs. The first of these will be given on Thursday afternoon, July 1, when the program will be furnished by Miss Grace Hickox of Chicago with her group of children who will present "Alice in Wonderland" set to music or "Mother Goose" rhymes. Not only the fortune-favored chil- with mothers or chaperones, but also dren who attend the concerts regularly the children of the Chicago settle- ments are present at these affairs and for the latter there are hearty, whole- some lunches, furnished at noon by the members of the Ravinia club. It is promised that there will be no mosquitoes at Ravinia this summer and good roads leading to the park are as- 57 A Series on the Economy Georgian.
