The coming of Mr. Clerk in 1923 marked a distinct advance in methods at New Trier by the intro- duction of what, in some respects, were regarded as daringly modern ideas. He has developed the advisor system to a fine degree and has been particularly interested in fostering a better basis of understanding be- tween teacher and parent. He has been responsible, also, for the estab- lishment of special visiting or inspec- tion days on which the parents are brought to the school and requested to follow through the classwork of their children. Mr. Clerk was formerly associated with the Handley Founda- tion school--termed a model school for a small city--at Winchester, Va. which was supported by the Rocke- feller Foundation. Dedication To parent Vision and self-sacrifice, Who, mid the hardships of that yester- year When sylvan wonders still untram- meled stood, Brought forth the purpose of our great New Trier, Most reverently we dedicate this play, In hope that Education's light alway Through shrouding mists of Ignorance may gleam, And, ever brightening, onward send its beam. No longer fruitful talents waste for want Of leader and instructor such as he; His varied growth we gladly celebrate, His growth and ours of quarter century. Then long live good King Thought, his royal court, And every helpful study, club, or sport; Where Cheating fails and honor gains its meed, Where good example leads to greater deed! --William Lanferman.
