HYDRAULIC-PRESS BRICK COMPANY «Member, American Face Brick Association - LEADING CREATORS OF COLORS AND TEXTURES IN FACE BRICK CHICAGO Moth Exterminator for Furniture Put in by Iredale Co. Using a process endorsed by the government, the Iredale Fireproof Warehouse company is now prepared to exterminate moths from upholstered overstuffed furniture as well as from rugs, draperies, furs, clothing, etc. The local warehouse company re- cently installed a furniture fumigation vault by the use of which it can guar- antee the total destruction of all moth and other insect life in any articles treated. The vault is eight by ten feet and six feet high, specially designed for the treatment of furniture, but any other objects which are subject to damage by moths can be treated in it. The vault when closed is absolutely air tight. It contains a hot water radiator which is heated by electricity - under thermostatic control. After furniture or objects to be fumigated are placed in the vault, temperature of about 85 degrees is maintained. At this tempera- ture moth and insect life is most ac- tive. After an hour about eleven pounds of carbon tetrachloride is poured into a trough at the top of the vault. In the temperature of the vault this vapor-. izes and spreads thoroughly through the vault's contents. This is one of three chemicals approved by the United States Government as destructive of moth life, and the one which will not harm the most delicate fabric and is not harmful to human beings. The furniture is left in the vault for twenty-four hours and then thoroughly vacuum cleaned so that it is absolutely clean as well as being free from all moths or other insects. This vault is the same as several which have been installed in the Field museum for the destruction of moths in the various exhibits there. Similar vaults are also used by the National museum and the Smithsonian institute in Washington. This process is guaranteed to destroy all moth life in anything treated, but does not prevent the return of moths if the objects are exposed to them la- ter. Another process which the Iredale warehouse has installed will, however, prevent moths ever attacking anything treated. Under this process, furniture, furs, rugs, clothing or anything else subject to damage by moths can be treated either at the warehouse or at home. The objects are sprayed with a patented liquid called "Mothimmune" and when once treated are forever im- mune to damage by moths. As a demonstration of the efficiency of Mothimmune there is at the Iredale warehouse a glass covered box in which are three pieces of carpet placed there a year ago. One of the pieces was put in untreated, the second after being treated with Mothimmune and the third after being treated and then scrubbed with the strongest soaps and cleaning compounds obtainable. Into this box have been placed live moth worms and moth millers at frequent intervals. The untreated piece of carpet is eaten so badly as to be practically ruined, but neither of the other pieces shows any signs of the moths ever having been THE ART GALLERIES of Bridge Chicago, Illinois.
