It was written by St. Thomas Aquinas nearly seven centuries ago and has never before been completely translated and assembled from the Latin tongue. During the Eucharistic Congress, devoted as it is to the exposition of the doctrine of the Catholic belief, the transla- tion and arrangement of this special votive Mass becomes the key to the entire ritual. Indeed, it becomes the prayer book of the million Catholic pilgrim visitors as well as a guide to the store house of liturgy which the Mass represents to the hundreds of thousands of non-Catholics who will also attend. It gives not only a beautiful and official translation of the Mass but it follows step by step the movement of the Pontifical Mass from the arrival of the celebrant at the altar through each prayer and ceremonial to the benediction, The tremendous labor of this arrangement has been beafti- fully and inspirationally done by A. J. Lorenz of the editorial staff of the Herald and Examiner and formerly of the Pon- tifical Josephinum, and edited by Rev. Wm. H. Agnew, S. J., President of Loyola University, appointed to this task by His Eminence, Cardinal Mundelein. A special introduction explaining the essentials of the great central ritual of the Mass has been written by Rev. Al- phonse M. Zamiara, S. J., Professor of Latin at Loyola Uni- versity. Cardinal Mundelein has placed his stamp of approval upon the entire work and upon its publication. The Chicago Herald and Examiner by good fortune in hav- ing the translator, Mr. Lorenz, associated with its editorial staff has been especially privileged to publish this most im- portant translation together with the keys to the steps of the ritual on next Sunday, June 20th, the opening day of the Congress; and to repeat the translation in its daily morning paper from day to day as the changes in the officers of the Mass and the changes in the liturgy take place. So that, on Sunday, June 20th, the entire world for the first time will read in English the complete Mass of St. Thomas Aquinas, with notations throughout of each step of the ritual; and, on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday the Catholic world may take this translation as the official text of the Mass and guide to the ritual.
