A July 10, 1926 WINNETKA TALK PRESENT OPERATIC GEMS AT RAVINIA Louis Eckstein Schedules Pro- gram of Favorites for Week of July 11 Another intriguing schedule of opera has been arranged by Mr. Louis Eck- stein for Ravinia during the third week of the present season of Ravinia opera and concerts which begins Sun- day night, July 11. That rollicking opera comique, "Martha" with its wealth of melody, its hearty fun and its appealing romance, is the offering selected for that time. Florence Mac- beth will appear in the title role with Mario Chamlee as Lionel, Ina Bours- kaya as Nancy, Virgilio Lazzari as Plunkett, Victorio Trevisan as Sir Tristen and Louis D'Angelo as the Sheriff. This cast is unusually expert in projecting a work of this kind. Miss Macbeth has. found the name part es- pecially congenial while Chamlee, op- posite her, has every opportunity for a fine display of lyric quality. Miss Bourskaya, ILazzari, Tevisan and D'Angelo are all admirably cast. Has- selmans will conduct. Sunday after- noon there will be a concert by the Chicago Symphony orchestra, under the direction of Eric Del.amarter. Jacques Gordon, violinist, will be solo- ist. All seats are free for these con- certs. The Monday night concerts will take on a new. significance next week for on Monday night there will be in- augurated a series of artists' concerts, which Mr. Eckstein has provided for his patrons. A soloist will be chosen from the opera forces who will give a complete song program in addition to the orchestral numbers of the Chi- cago Symphony orchestra, which will appear as usual under the direction of Eric Del.amarter, with instrumental soloists chosen from the orchestral body. Monday night, Miss Luella Melius, coloratura soprano will be the soloist. Miss Melius, who has been eminently successful at Ravinia this season, is as widely known as a con- cert singer as she is as an opera star. Her program will include one aria-- the "Polonaise" from "Mignon" by Thomas, a group of three French and Italian songs and a group of three English songs. The orchestral pro- gram is particularly attractive. Al seats for these concerts will be free, the general admission at the gate cov- ering everything. Tuesday night, July 13, "La Boheme" will be given. This is an- other Puccini work which holds ex- alted position in the regard of all ad- mirers of this great modern composer, and there is every reason why this Ravinia performance should be mem- orable as Mme. Lucrezia Bori is to be heard as Mimi and Giovanni Martinel- li is to be Rodolfo. Miss Maxwell is cast as Musetta while Mario Basiola, Virgilio Lazzari and Desire Defrere, will form the trio of Bohemians. Paolo Ananian will appear in the two char- acter parts and Francesco Curci will be Parpignol. Mr. Papi will conduct Wednesday night, July 14, another performance of Gounod's "Faust" will be given with Mme. Rethberg as Mar- guerite. This time Mario Chamlee will be heard in the title role, and again Leon Rothier will be Mephis- topheles. The beauty of Mme. Reth- berg's vocal style has excited wide- spread admiration and Mr. Chamlee has won hearty acclaim in the name part. Mr. Rothier brings to bear an individuality as Mephistopheles which makes this part an outstanding ex- ample of the polished French style. Defrere is cast as Valentine, Miss Max- well as Siebel and Ananian as Wag- ner. The ballet will be a feature. Mr. Hasselmans will conduct. Thursday afternoon, the regular children's concert and entertainment will be given, the first half of the pro- gram being presented by the Chicago Symphony orchestra, Mr. Del.amarter explaining the various numbers to his little auditors. The entertainment forming the second half of the pro- gram will have special interest, con- sisting of a group of dances arranged to intrigue juvenile interest. These will be presented by Miss Ruth Page, assisted by Mark Turbyfill and en- semble. These concerts are free for all children twelve years of age or under. Reserved seats are free for everyone. Thursday night, July 15, "Romeo and Juliet" will be the offering with Mme. Bori, greatest interpreter of the lovely heroine in this part, while Ed- ward Johnson will be Romeo. Leon Rothier is cast a Friar Laurent. The Juliet of Mme. Bori is a classic vo- cally and dramatically while Johnson has a keen instinct for the effective interpretation of the role he will es- say. Rothier's fine singing as Friar Laurent is proverbial.
