July 10, 1926 WINNETKA TALK Lod 23 NORTHWESTERN GETS NAVAL RESERVE CORPS One of Six Schools Throughout the Country to Get Naval R. 0. T. C. Training By arrangements with the United States Navy, a training corps for Na- val Reserve officers is to be establish- ed at Northwestern university, Evans- ton campus, with the opening of the fall term. The government is now cre- ating six such naval training corps at the following institutions : Harvard, Yale, Georgia Tech. Uni- versity of Washington, University of California, and one, between the east and west coasts, at university. A feature that will appeal to the public will be the fact that sports ac- tivities are to be encouraged among the N.U. jackies. The university al- ready has an army R.O.T.C. unit and games of all sorts between the army and the navy will be featured at North- western, according to an announce- ment by President Walter Dill Scott. Sixty freshmen from the incoming class at Northwestern will be invited to take the new naval training course. This done, they will be furnished with boats and other naval equipment and will be in charge of a special detail of regular U. S. navy officers. Will Have Ship In the summer, a navy training ship will be furnished for the N.U. jackies for an extended summer cruise, the students to help in managing the boat. The new naval course will be of four vears' duration and at the close of the course tha <raduating tars will be given commissions in the reserve corps of the U. S. Navy. "By formal action of the Northwes- tern university board of trustees and of the faculty, the offer of the United States Navy to establish a training corps on our Evanston campus has been accepted," said President Scott. "T wish to express special thanks to Captain Hines, commandant of the Great Lakes Training station, and to Captain W. D. Pulester, chief of the training division in charge of Naval R.O.T.C. units at Washington, D.C, for their cordial and generous co-ope- ration in working out the details of the problem at Northwestern. What they have told me indicates that the establishment of the only students' naval unit between the Atlantic and Pacific coasts at Northwestern univer- sity will be a splendid thing, both for our students and for all Middle Wes- tern boys who will be interested in such a technical course in the future." Dr. Scott added that the army R.O. T.C. officers and men will co-operate with the naval corps in a program of training and athletics, and that this feature already has been discussed. "It will be interesting to see on the campus of a Middle Western universi- ty in the near future the blue of the navy as well as the khaki of the United States army," Dr. Scott con- cluded. Northwestern Miss Cornelia Keith, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Keith, 310 Warwick road, Kenilworth, motored ta Apple- ton, Wis, with her fiance, Cleon Lar- sen, and his two sisters, to visit Mr. Larsen's parents. Hub's Evanston Store Announces First Sale George Lytton, vice-president of the Hub, Henry C. Lytton and Sons, stated yesterday in announcing the first clearance sale at the Evanston shop, "Our clearance sales have al- ways meant a great deal to our pa- trons for one important reason: We always aim to maintain complete as- | sortments throughout the season, in fact, right up to the last minute. So, in these different events you will find selections of the most desirable mer- chandise of the season at prices that represent very decisive savings. "As we believe we have introduced a new standard of variety, quality and service in Evanston--so now we will attempt to establish a precedent in value-giving clearance sales. We ex- pect them to still further demonstrate our clear-cut desire to maintain a a well deserved and undisputed leader- | ship. : : | "You may depend upon it, this first | sale in our new Evanston shop will be worth while."
