Rethberg, who was prevented by illness from ap- pearing as soloist with the Chicago Symphony orchestra last Monday night, will be heard at the recital con- cert--the third of Mr. Eckstein's se- ries--on Monday night, July 26. Ed- ward Johnson kindly consented to ap- pear in Mme. Rethberg's place last Monday and won the enthusiastic ap- plause of a large audience. The same reception awaits Mme. Rethberg. The orchestra will, as usual, be under the direction of Mr. Del,amarter, who has prepared a splendid program. Mme. Rethberg will be heard in five numbers --two arias and three groups of songs in French, German, Italian and Eng- lish. Reserved seats for these con- certs are free, the general admission at th gate covering everything. That beloved and colorful work "Car- men" is to be given on Tuesday night, July 27, with Ina Bourskaya in the title role and Giovanni Martinelli as Don Jose. Ravinia patrons are well acquainted with the splendid interpre- tation given the role of the gypsy girl by Mme. Bourskaya, and Martin- elli's Don Jose is one of the fine mem- ories of last season. This tenor makes this part so outstanding both vocally and histrionically, that his appearance as the betrayed soldier has been eag- erly awaited. His singing of the "Flower Song" brings added beauties to this gem of arias. Miss Melius will be heard as Micaela, a part to which she is admirably adapted by reason of her beautiful voice which lends itself effectively to the Micaela arias. Mario Basiola will be heard as Escamillo, which gives him oppor- tunity for some fine singing, including the Toreador song. Others in the cast are Miss Maxwell, Miss Falco, Mojica, D'Angelo and Ananian. Miss Ruth Page will be seen in a solo dance. Wilfrid Pelletier will conduct. Chamlee in Cast Wednesday night, July 28, "La Tra- viata" is to be presented with Mme. Bori in the title role and Mario Cham- lee as Alfredo. Mme. Bori gives an individual interpretation of the role she will delineate in this opera, that makes it one of her most delightful characterizations. She is endowed for it both vocally and histrionically, and her success as the conscientious Tra- viata has been outstanding. Chamlee has aroused the enthusiasm of his aud- itors whenever he has appeared this season, and he will have special chance to display his manifold talents as Al- fredo, which is one of the finest lyr- ic roles to be found in the realm of opera. It requires beauty of tone, smoothness of technique and a sym- pathetic understanding of human na- ture--qualities which Chamlee possess- es in abundance.
