September 4, 1926 WINNETKA TALK WINNETKA "WILDCATS" BEAT SOUTH SIDE A. C. Baseball Team Wins Overtime See-saw Game at Playfield in Twelfth Inning by 7 to 6 In a see-saw contest which lasted until way after supper time, the Win- netka "Wildcats" battered themselves to a well-earned victory over the South Siders last Sunday at the Playfield. The game was finally brought to a close at the end of the ninth inning, Winnetka taking the verdict 7 to 6. After losing a two run lead in the ninth inning, the home talent went in- to the extra inning with their minds centered on keeping their coveted string of victories intact. The game was an up hill battle from the second inning until the finish, and not until the eighth inning did the locals take the lead, only to have it wiped out in the ninth by the visitors' two run rally. The South Siders started doing busi- ness in the second inning when they hopped on "Hank" Miller for a pair of runs. "Hank" toiled on the slab for the locals in the absence of Earl Smith who has been on a vacation. Two er- rors in a row by "Bob" Burmeister, and a single by Adler did the trick. Winnetka tied matters up again in the third on two walks and a single by Rudolph. The visitors forged ahead again in the fourth on singles by Simp- son and Heilman, and a double by Ad- ler The locals came back in the home half of the fifth and tied the score for the second time. "Red" Dahl's walk, and singles by Burmeister and Brown accounting for the lone tally. The visitors scored once more in the seventh, but the "Wildcats" counted three times in the eighth when Dahl walked for the third time, Burmeister | and Brown each hit singles, and Myer erred on Schmidt's grounder. The occasion was all set for victory number four, but the visitors knocked "Hank" Miller for a pair in their half of the ninth to tie the score for the third time. This concluded the scoring of both teams until the twelfth when Rudolph walked, Holfelder singled and "Chubby" Lewis knocked the winning tally across by singling through short. A large crowd witnessed the game and was generous in its applause when the boys turned in some sparkling fielding. Once in the third inning when after Craven of the visitors had singled, Clovis knocked a hard ground- er close to third base. "Fid" Runn- feldt stabbed it, threw to Dahl at second who in turn pegged to Rudolph at first in time to complete a twin kill- ing. Next Sunday the fast stepping .Du- quaine A. C. will be at the Playfield. This team comes here toting a very long string of victories and it will be a battle to see which team will come out afiead. On Monday (Labor Day) Winnetka will engage the Niles ag- gregation. As Niles boasts a victory over Northbrook, who, in turn took two straight from the locals, a nip and tuck battle will be assured. The bat- teries for the holiday games will be Earl Smith twirling against the Du- quaine outfit and "Hank" Miller pitching against Niles, "Bill" Carey will be behind the bat on both oc- casions. All games are scheduled to start at three o'clock and as there is no admission charged every loyal Win- netkan is urged to attend at least one of the game and see what a real snap- py ball team is upholding the reputa- tion of Winnetka. The Caravel Tea Room, 576 Lincoln avenue, Winnetka, will be closed all day, Monday, September 6. Mrs. E. A.
