Through the efforts of this depart- ment, $103,146 was paid by relatives to their dependents; many divorce cases, where children were involved, were dis- missed and this department has suc- ceeded in eliminating "the borrowed wife and baby in criminal trials" by co-operation with the judges of the courts. In addition to the investigations for the Probate and County courts for the preservation of small estates of feeble minded and releases from institutions, this department secured pledges from relatives who cauld afford to maintain inmates, who were charity wards of Oak Forest, to the amount of $11,556. Where it was found that relatives were financially able and morally and legal- ly responsible, they were required to pledge $15 per month for relative in- mates of the institution. Invites Inspection During Open House Training of scores of Public Service company employes in the ability to guide parties of visitors through the company's various electric and gas generating stations during Open House Week from October 4 to 9, inclusive, is occupying the attention of the com- pany's officials. The extent to which inquiries are being received at the company's district headquarters and the general offices in Chicago, is evi- dence of the widespread public inter- est in the open house week project, it is said. Thousands of visitors were escorted through the company's plants last year and those in charge of this year's arrangements are preparing for a considerably larger attendance, due to the interest growing out of last year's event. The purpose of Open House Week, according to Charles W. Bradley, vice- president in charge of public relations and service, is to familiarize the gen- eral public throughout the company's territory with the organisation which furnishes their gas or electric service. "It is our belief," stated Mr. Bradley recently, "that people are interested in learning something about the manu- facture of gas and electricity. From an educational and informative stand- point we feel that the public will wel- come this opportunity of visiting one or more of the company's plants in order to see these essential commodi- ties in the process of being made, and to have the process explained to them." Thousands of invitations have been mailed to the company's customers, in each of which there has been enclosed an attractive complimentary inspec- tion pass and a list of the properties which may be visited. Dr. and Mrs. Sanger Brown of Kenilworth have gone on a motor trip through Canada. They left the second week in September, and are expected to return shortly. e337 ORRINGTON HOTEL Our New Evanston is now Open 1RuBY= FOOEWATER BEACH HOTEL 0 \\-a BAST WASHINGTOM SHOES for Fhe LITTLE MISS JT THIS AWKWARD ¢ AGE THB ig START BY'S FOOTWE B THIS AGE THE FOOT FIRMLY hi Me sr x
