October 9, 1926 WINNETKA TALK Music Instructor Tells of Her Life Among the Chinese Miss laura Coupland, who has re- cently returned from a residence of a number of years in China, and who has joined the faculty of the Columbia School of Music, teaching in the Wil- mette Branch at 627 11th street, has the following to say in an interview covering her experiences in the Celes- tial Kingdom : "I visited the usual places in the Orient for the short time the ship was in port; Yokohama, Kobe, Nagasaki, Shanghai--with these I have literally a passing acquaintance, but I am more familiar with Hong Kong, Canton, and other cities of South China, for I lived in Canton for five years. The most interesting things that happened were, of course, wars; I miss them in America. Although the Chinese first invented gunpowder, it remained for the Christian nations to show them its possibilities. When I went out to China it was still customary for armies to fight all day without a single cas- ualty--and if there was one it was all too often the innocent bystander! But four years later, in a big battle over the possession of one city, a thousand men were killed. "Curiously enough, in spite of the thrill of cannon and bullets, it is the funny side of war which one remem- bers. I suppose the men who went to France feel the same, even with the memory of the tragedies which oc- curred there. But in war or peace, always the most absorbing thing to me was the Chinese people, and my efforts to absorb as much as possible of their background of 4,000 years of history, literature and culture."
