October 16, 1926 WINNETKA TALK MADAME LENSKA WILL GIVE BENEFIT RECITAL (Continued from Page 1) it is impossible to be on any job, in- cluding that of motherhood, twenty- four hours a day. Patience, under- standing, and a sense of peace and quiet are some of the ingredients of satisfactory motherhood. It is practic- ally impossible to hold these qualities if one is constantly on the job. Mothers Need Relief Suppose, however, that the mother is relieved of the care of the child for five hours a day. The child is mean- time at a nursery school in a proper environment in contact with skilled adults, as contrasted with over-tired, pre-occupied, telephone-busy mothers or untrained and, too often, unintelli- gent help. When the mother takes up the care of the child again at the end of a nursery school day, after the child has awakened from his nap, both mother and child are fresh and ready to enjoy each other. Conferences between parents and the nursery school staff are held at regu- lar intervals. Problems of all sorts are discussed and remedial measures are suggested, sometimes for physical dif- ficulties, sometimes for food idiosyn- crasies. Sometim:s it is the child who won't drink his milk, or the child with temper tantrums who is under discus- sion, or, again, the child who bites his nails or the child who doesn't want to go to bed. All of these are typical nursery school problems, due usually to inadequate handling by parents. Advice is given by trained, experi- enced staff members and as a rule a wiser point of view is gradually de- veloped. Parents of very young chil- dren not yet independent of the home ere usually very interested and co- operative. Much more could be said of parent education by the nursery school if space allowed. Next week's issue will tell of research possibilities in the nursery school. In the meantime, residents are re- minded that Madame Lenska's concert is being held for the benefit of a nursery school to be conducted in one of the public schools of the village. Tickets for the concert are on sale at Adams pharmacy, Skokie school, or may be obtained from Mrs. Dudley Cc. French, 503 Hawthorne lane, telephone Winnetka 395. The Woman's club asks the co-operation of all residents. Read the Want Ads Br-r-r-r Don't let the cold weather find your Heating Plant in a broken-down condition. The safety islands in question have suffered a more or less continuous bat- tering for the past several years and seemed never to regain a fit state of repair.
