¥ Ramses October 30, 1926 WINNETKA TALK 13 PARTS OF BIBLE NOT SAME VALUE: PATTO Talks Sponsored by Congrega- tional and Christ Churches Attract Large Audiences The largest audience which has at- tended the lectures given under the joint auspices of Winnetka Congre- gational church and Christ church heard a splendid address last Tues- day evening by Dr. Carl S. Patton. Dr. Patton has captivated his audi- ences by his obvious mastery of his subject, and his naive, matter-of-fact presentation. Word has spread from week to week of the interest of the lectures, and Dr. Patton may soon | need to move to larger quarters. tip . Instead of his previously announced subject, Dr Patton will talk next Wednesday evening on "The Forma- tion of the Christian Church," and particularly of the part which Paul played in it. Dr. Patton character- ized Paul as "a man a good deal more frog than people who are living to- day. In his talk last Tuesday evening on the subject, "The Heart of the New Testament," Dr. Patton said in part: Gospels Heart of Bible "For a long time it was assumed that the Bible was of equal value and authority throughout. Then people be- gan to put the New Testament above the Old Testament. Later they have come to discriminate between various parts of the New Testament, as to their religious value. It is now com- monly felt that the heart of the New Testament is in the Gospels. "The first three gospels seem to stand in a class by themselves as com- | pared with the Gospel of John. We are concerned with the first three gos- pels this evening. "Starting with the statement in | Luke's prologue that he was not him- | | self an eye-witness of the life of Jesus, {but that he had certain sources upon | which he depended, we institute a | comparison between the gospel of | | Luke and the gospel of Mark. We | [find the gospel of Mark utilized to | |such an extent and in such a way | |in the gospel of Luke, that we con- clude that Mark was one of the] sources upon which Luke depended. | "Taking this hint from the relation | of Luke and Mark, we compare | Mark's gospel with that of Matthew and we concluded that Matthew also {was acquainted with the work of Mark. This indicates that of the first | three gospels, Mark's is the earliest. We then look through Mark's gospel to see if we can find a clue to the time when it was written. First Literature on Christ | "Our comparison of Matthew and Mark and Luke has disclosed another | fact; that Matthew and Luke have a large amount of the same material in such close identity of content and | wording, that we suspect that they {had at least one other common source beside Mark. A more careful com- | parison shows what sort of a book this second source of theirs was, evidently a book of the sayings of Jesus. If we can tell when Mark wrote his gospel, {and when and where this other book originated that Matthew and Luke used in writing their books, we shall have a picture of the earliest attempts known to us through the New Testa- ment, to put life and words of sa | into permanent literary form. "This inquiry, formal and scholas- [tic as it may seem, is full of religious | interest, and gives us a view of the Christian church in its first years that | | has much practical value." | The lecture next Wednesday eve- | ning will be held again in the Parish | House of Christ church at Oak street and Linden avenue.
