PRETZEL North shore society took Tito Schipa into its heart, last Monday evening at New Trier High school, at the first of | the Artist-Recital series sponsored by | the Winnetka Music club. Mr. Schipa, ! premier lyric tenor for the Chicago Opera company, showed by his excel- lent treatment of the songs why he is considered the foremost living tenor. | In the graceful, exquisite, modulations of his voice, and his enchanting man- ner of poise, he thrilled his audience. And he was generous, responding graciously to the tremendously enthu- siastic applause that swept to him at the close of each number. Mr. Schipa opened his program with Caccini's "Amarilli," and "Nina," by Pergolese. After acknowledging again and again the applause, he sang "La Farfaletta," a very old song, the com- poser of which is unknown. His sec- ond number was "Il Sogno," from Massenet's opera, "Manon." As an encore, he sang, "Ah! So Pure," from "Martha." Masterly Accompanist Mr. Jose Echaniz, assisting artist, demonstrated his masterly accompani- ments at the piano, (all of which were played without notes) and in his solo, "Scherzo," by Chopin, that he is a pi- anist of the first rank. His fingers were absolutely well-controlled, his touch was firm and delicate, and everything he played was done with a real sym- pathetic understanding. He played a Minuet from "L'Arlesienne," by Bizet- Rachmaninoff, for an encore. Mr. Schipa began his fourth number with "Ave Maria," composed by him- self, an arrangement that was very lovely... This was followed by Han- del's "Where FE'er You Walk," and Paladilhe's "Suzanne." Three encores were demanded by the delighted audi- ence, "Carnavale," by Fudrain; "The Day When My Dreams Come True," by Bateman; and "April Fool." Generous With Encores His fifth number was composed of "Princesita," by Padilla; "Harlequin's Serenade," from "Pagliacci," by Leon- cavallo; and "Chi Se Nne Scorda Cchiu." bv Barthelemy. Liszt's "Lie- bestraum," and "Her Dream," were the encores. Mr. Echaniz then played a group, "Capriccetto" by Mr. Schipa, and "Vi- via Navarra," by Larregia-Echaniz. He ws oblieed to give two encores, "Danza Lucumi," an old Cuban dance by Le- cuona; and "Porque?" by Cervantes. Mr. Schipa's next group was com- posed of Buzzi-Peccia's "Nina Queri- da"; and "Ay! Ay Ay!" by Perez- Freire. His encore was the favorite, "O Sole Mio," and a Spanish song, "Amapola." Mr. Schina's last number was Doni- zetti's "Elisir D'Amore." He was called back many times by the bursts of applause, and finally sane "Woman is Fickle," from Rigoletto. Not satisfied to go home even then, the audience, eager for more, persuaded Mr. Schipa to give another encore, and Mr. Schipa generously complied, with "Mi Viejo Amor," bv Oteo. The Winnetka Music club reports 1059 tickets sold, and a long waiting list. Many who had come through the cold and rain on Monday night, hoping to be able to buy a single ticket, were turned away. Cecilia Hansen, violinist, who has Will Give Bach Program in Organ Concert Nov. 16 The second concert of the North Shore Community Organ series to be given Tuesday evening, November 16, at 8 o'clock. at St. Luke's church, Ev- anston, is the most significant program offered since these concerts were in- | augurated five years ago, it is an- nounced. It is significant because Herbert E. Hyde, the organist, will play an entire program of Bach, including three of the shorter preludes and fugues, two major fugues, a group of chorales and | lighter numbers.
