Ww. November 20, 1926 WINNETKA TALK EXTENSIVE TRAVEL TO SUGGEST HOME DESIGN A. W. Paulson Plans New Resi- dence Unique in All Details on Tower Road The wreath has been hoisted on the new residence which A. W. Paulson is building at the northwest corner of Tower road and Greenwood avenue, Winnetka, out at the edge of the Skokie and immediately south of the famous Rainbow log cabin, the replica of Mr. Paulson's old home in Sweden, and which thousands of persons have journied to view and admire during the past three years. Mr. Paulson's latest venture in building is for the market. Just what price he will have on the cleverly de- signed home which he now has well underway, he cannot state. He says he will be able to determine that after it is completed, as he is working into it so many original ideas that it is impossible to estimate the cost in advance of their execution. A brief survey of his plans give assurance of a quaintness and of a house so different from anything else on the north shore, that it is quite reasonable to presume that its comple- tion will be marked by another steady stream of visitors to inspect and ad- mire it. Result of Travels Incorporated in its plans are ideas which Mr. Paulson has gained from years of experience in designing and decorating residences and from recent travels in his old home section in Sweden, in the Shone district of that country. Also from observations which he made when upon a somewhat recent tour of old St. Augustine, Florida, and he has not overlooked the beauty of the sheer walls of Starved Rock, an historic spot of Illinois. The house is to comprise nine rooms, with two bath rooms and provision for a third, should the purchaser desire. The exterior will be of logs, stone and stucco, with a thatched roof, the latter made by W. N. Cramer, an expert in this work, and who is also the carpen- ter contractor. On the east, or Greenwood frontage, will be the entrance, also a huge chim- ney of stone boulders. The entrance door and the gable over the door will be of Polish art design. The Starved Rock reproduction will be done in stucco, on the east side of the building, where also will be featured a pleasing arch, copied from old Fort Marion, the first fort erected centuries ago at St. Augustine, and the two openings at either side of the arch representing gun ports. Reproduces Fountain Beneath the arch will be a reproduc- tion in concrete and stucco of the famous old Ponce de Leon fountain. Also, on the east outside wall, between the first and second stories, in the stucco, will be a reproduction of the good ship Viking. In the south front gable will be a reproduction of the first sun dial brought into the United States by the Spaniards, and which may be seen to this day, on the old, old church in St. Augustine. A vaulted ceiling is designed for the entrance hall, from which a spiral stairway will lead to the second floor, thus permitting a free range of vision from the entrance through the library. The walls in the living room will be cyprus, in panel effect, which, with the beams in the ceiling will be decorated in the old area effect. In the living room will be a corner fire-place with a Swedish design canopy above, all Restful Feet Tell the Story {5 Daniel Green) Comfy/ The Rea Comfy in a long assortment of colors: Delft Blue, Turquoise Blue, Rose, Lavender, Pink, Black with Pink Lining. The ceilings in the dining room will be laid in panels, imitating wood. This, Mr. Paulson explains will be a reproduction of the interior of one of the finest homes in Sweden and on which he worked forty-one years ago. Last year, during his visit to his native country, he again inspected this work of art and determined to reproduce it in the home which he is now building. The interior of the panel section will be in ornamentation, representing in- laid work. The walls will be glazed in! a bluish effect. The doors of the first floor will be both of oak and in black. The black doors will be imitation of inlaid ivory. The kitchen will also be featured with many novel ideas in design and decorations. The decorations of the walls on the second floor, Mr. Paulson says he expects to leave somewhat to the taste of the persom who purchases the home.
