But vacations seem always to come to an end. To read the diary of who travels with her eyes open is a trip in itself. ON TRAVELS IN EUROPE Mrs. Aubrey T. Williams Records Fund of Interesting Facts and Experiences Dashing over to Europe is getting to be a mere week-end jaunt for many Winnetkans, but, judging from the many who fly back and forth from Paris to Chicago, they have little mem- ory of what they have seen, aside from | quantities of statues, cathedrals, and | constant examining of passports. But one Winnetka family who sep- arated this summer kept accurate and fascinating diaries. The son went into the Canadian wilds. The younger children journeyed to northern Michi- gan. The father took several weeks | hunting in Wisconsin, and the mother | took a most interesting trip through Europe. Mrs. Aubrey T. Williams of 163 Bertling lane, an accomplished musi- cian, left New York on June 25 on the "Colombo," an Italian steamer. While on the trip over, Mrs Williams took part in the ship's concert, giving a pianoforte duet with Miss Ruth Tay- lor, and a soprano solo in the services held July 4. The event was most impressive, with the famous Swiss guards parading in splendor and pomp. Venice she described as "a great | place to be lazy." Mrs. Williams met two Chicago friends in St. Marks. After the dinner the party rode in a gondola and "listened, enchanted, to Italian music." Leaving Italy, the group went to Switzerland, where the "snow-capped purple, white and red summits sur- rounded the hotel. One never sees a rocker or door knob in Italian or Swiss hotels." Mrs. Williams writes that the song we used to sing at school, the "Lorelei," which means, "Tisten," was brought back clearly to her mind by a visit to the castle. Leaving Switzerland, and Germany, the group went on to Amsterdam, a city, like Venice, built on piles, and visited the famous diamond factory and the cheese factores, in the wooden shoe district. And they, as every traveler must do, sailed in the Zuider Zee to the Isle of Marken. And then came Paris, and the Col- umn of the Bastile, the cathedral of Notre Dame built in 1157, with its forged iron door, the rose windows, and the Latin quarters. London came next and finally Lon- don, reeking in history, steeped with When you want something different, something home- made in Baked Goods try the Village Home Bakery 730 Elm Street ain George S.
