November 27, 1926 WINNETKA TALK 19 WINS IN ATHLETICS Charles F. "Chuck" Lauer, Formerly of New Trier, Makes Name in Foot- ball at University of Iowa Charles F. Lauer, son of Mr. and Mrs. M. W. Lauer of Wilmette, for- mer New Trier basketball star, now attending the University of Iowa, has concluded his first year of college football. He went out the first night of practice this fall and has an enviable record on one of the best freshman teams ever produced at Towa, it is said. Coach Parkins placed him at quarter- back position and he has handled that position in a satisfactory manner throughout the season. Now the basketball season has opened and "Chuck" plans to set the old floor on fire. Swimming has tempted him but it is believed that he will stick to basketball. Next spring baseball or track will take up his in- terest in athletics. "Chuck" will be remembered as a student and athlete of New Trier High school. He won eight letters in high school athletic competition, three in basketball, two in football, two in soc- cer, and one in baseball. He captained the 1925-26 basketball team, champions of the Suburban league, playing at guard position. He played halfback on one of the best football teams in the history of New Trier high. Soccer also included him on its role and he played two years on a team that has held practically the championship of Illinois for five years. Athletics is not the only line of en- deavor he is following at Iowa. "Chuck" is a pledge of the Delta Tau Delta national social fraternity and he is a member of the Spanish club of the university. Also "Chuck" was nominated for a freshmen class office when elections were held a few weeks ago. Charles has not decided at present in what subject he will major. He sometimes thinks he will take a journ- alism course next year. It is likely he will include coaching in his "list of subjects for the negt three years. A THANKSGIVING PROGRAM Three attractive playlets, "The Greek Thanksgiving," "An Old Eng- lish Thanksgiving" and "A Pilgrim Thanksgiving," were presented by members of the social science classes of the Horace Mann school in a special Thanksgiving program at the regular assembly period on Wednesday. The plays contrasted the different ways in which Thanksgiving is observed in different parts of the world and were given under the direction of Miss Sparks and Miss Lawson, teachers of the fifth and sixth grades of the Hor- ace Mann school. PLAYS FOR STUDENTS The pupils of the Horace Mann school were given a rare treat Mon- day, November 22, when Mrs. Valona Brewer presented a very attractive group of violin solos. Her description of each piece before it was played made the program doubly interesting to the children. The program was as follows: "Uncle Rastus" by Cecil Burleigh, "Chant Negre" a negro air and "Henri Kati" by Hubay. Edmund Fulton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank D. Fulton of 884 Hill road, who is attending the Westminister school at Simsbury, Conn., with several of his schoolmates, will spend the Thanks- giving holidays in New York City. ---- Mrs. Harry Lay, 1408 Edgewood lane, was called east this week by the death of her sister in Rochester, N.
