Cl A yg Te tates November 27, 1926 WINNETKA TALK 45 Large Gathering of Parents, Teachers Hold First Meeting Mothers, fathers, and teachers of the 150 north shore children enrolled in the Children's school of the National Kindergarten and Elementary college, held thejr first meeting in Harrison hall on Tuesday evening, November 16. Miss Clara Belle Baker, director of the Children's school, introduced her sister, president Edna Dean Baker, who welcomed the parents of the col- lege and spoke briefly of the necessity for co-operation and understanding between teachers and parents in order to provide "an education that will serve to build habits and attitudes useful to the child in all his living." Miss Laura Hooper, head of the de- partment of measurement of the col- lege, explained the use made in the college of the results of mental and gchievement tests given the children, and cited some of the amusing situa- tions which have arisen in giving these tests to the children in the nursery school. Dr. Mary Pope, examining physician for the Children's school, in making her report said, "We have quite a group of children physically remarkable. It is seldom that we find a defect that has not already been discovered by the parents and is under supervision." Miss Clara Belle Baker in speaking on "The Educational Aims of the School" said, "Our aim in this school is not to develop skills, not to stress results too much in the beginning, but to develop first a desire and interest-- an attitude of joy in their work on the part of the children." Following the meeting the teachers acted as hostesses in their own rooms, and the parents had an opportunity of seeing something of the work the chil- dren are doing, and of discussing prob- dems with the teachers.
