Christian Science Churches "Ancient and modern necromancy, alias mesmerism and hypnotism, de- nounced" was the subject of the Les- son Sermon in all Churches of Christ, Scientist, Sunday, November 28. The Golden Text was from I John 4:1, "Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world." Among the citations which comprised the Lesson-Sermon was the following from the Bible: "Then was brought unto him one possessed with a devil, blind, and dumb; and he healed him, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw. And all the people were amazed, and said, Is not this the son of David? But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils. And Jesus knew their thoughts and said unto them, . . And if IT by Beelzebub cast devils, by whom do your children cast them out? therefore they shall be your judges. But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the Kingdom of God is come unto you" (Matthew 12:22-24, 25, 27, 28). The Lesson-Sermon also included the following passages from the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scrip- tures," by Mary Baker Eddy: "Human will-power is not Science . .. Willing the sick to recover is not the meta- physical practice of Christian Science, but is sheer animal magnetism . . , Truth, and not corporal will, is the di- vine power which says to disease, 'Peace, be still'" (p. 144).
