Richards (Contributed) Twenty-five men sat in the Amer- ican Legion room of Community House in wrapt attention. Each was doing some very earnest thinking. Each was conscious of the fact that twenty-four others were thinking as earnestly as he. The sense of this community of earnest thinking was impressive. What they were thinking of was an old, old story, but dramatic and human as only the old stories that have sur- vived the centuries can be. It was the story of the woman brought in her shame to Jesus by a group of men hos- tile to them both. Again "that fine courtliness, that fine gentlemanliness" of Jesus was reversed. Even an outcast woman was treated gently at his hands at the same time that he shamed the accusers, without scolding them, by the challenge "Let him that is without sin among you cast the first stone." The speaker pointed out how much the attitude of a man toward such a woman reflects the extent to which the spirit of Christ has captured him. Does he scorn her, does he insult her or does he without any response to her ad- vances pity her and think of her as a product of the civilization of which he is a responsible part? The story un- der consideration can have no doubt as to which was Jesus' way. The leader of this group is Rev. James Austin Richards, who in the in- timacies of the weekly sessions of the Men's Sunday Morning class is making many new and valuable contacts with the men who are attending. Many new men of the village would enjoy the freedom of discussion and these inti- macies with Mr. Richards if they should drop in of a Sunday morning at 9:30. The class is studying together the Gospel of John. An interesting sidelight from last Sunday's discussion is that the spiritual values of these old familiar passages lose nothing at the hands of modern scho- larship. Scholars generally agree that this entire story of the woman taken in sin was not a part of the original but an interpolation that crept in later. Yet that does not in the least lessen its authenticity as a story of Jesus and scholars are the first to concede that our biographical material about Jesus would have suffered a heavy loss if this, even though an interpolation, had failed to come down to us. 2 THE Over 700 Salad and Salad Dressing Recipes. a nm : A New Book of Salads!
