A Tem Aa. hh December 11, 1926 WINNETKA TALK 25 OPERA'S SIXTH WEEK "Tiefland," Celebrated Eugen d'Albert Opera to be Given Next Thursday; Muzio Sings Lead The sixth week of the Chicago Civic opera season at the Auditorium theatre will bring the long promised production of "Tiefland," by Eugen d'Albert, an opera that has gained tniversal popu- larity in Europe. The two-thousandth performance of "Tiefland" was recent- ly celebrated in Berlin, and the opera was chosen as the season's premiere for five of the leading opera houses in Austria and Germany where it ranks in popularity with "Carmen." Like "Carmen" the opera has a Spanish setting and the plot is taken from Guimera's novel, "Marta of the Low- lands." This opera will give Chicago its first opportunity to hear Claudia Muzio sing in English, for "Tiefland" will be sung in the vernacular. Some of the most popular operas of the re- pertoire will be given repetitions dur- ing the week. Saturday evening, December 11, will bring the farewell appearance of Toti Dal Monto in "Lucia di Lammermoor," at popular prices with Antonio Cortis, Giovanni Polese, Jose Mojica, Edouard Cotreuil, Alice d'Hormanoy, Lodovico Oliviera; corps de ballet; conductor Frank St. Leger. Sunday matinee, December 12, will bring the season's first performance of the melodious and ever popular "Mar- tha," with Edith Mason, Tito Schipa, Virgilio Lazzari, and Vittorio Trovisan in the cast; Moranzoni conducting. Monday evening, December 13, "The Jewess" will be given with Rosa Raisa, Eido Norona, Charles Marshall, Jose Mojica, Alexander Kipnis, and the corps de ballet; Weber conducting. Tuesday evening "Rigoletto" will be repeated, with FEido Norena, Lorna Doone Jackson, Antonio Certis (ap- pearing as the Duke for the first time), Richard Bonelli, and Edouard Cotreuil; Moranzoni conducting. Wednesday evening, "La Sonambula" will be repeated, with Florence Mac- beth making her first appearance of the season, and Maria Claessons, Tito Schipa, and Virgilio Lazzari in the cast; Moranzoni conducting. Thursday evening will be devoted to "Tiefland," sung in English, with Clau- dia Muzio, Lorna Doone Jackson, Irene Pavloska, Helen Freund, Forrest La- mont, Giacomo Rimini, and Alexander Kipnis; Weber conducting. Friday night the Auditorium will be dark. Saturday matinee the tuneful "Elixir of Love" will be given for the first time this season, with Florence Macbeth, Tito Schipa, Giacomo Rimini, and Vittorio Trevisan; Moranzoni con- ducting.
