January 15, 1927 WINNETKA TALK 43 To See Minturn Players Is to Chase the Blues By CRITIC Many lovers of the "legitimate" in our north shore towns journey by car, public or private, down to Evanston to hear and see and enjoy the Min- turn Players at the New Evanston where Harry Minturn and Miss Mar- gery Williams, ably accompanied by a most competent group of convincing actors, are presenting plays in such a manner as to cure one permanently of the blues. Many of our neighbors, having seen these capable people in "The Best People," "The Cat and the Canary," and "The Family Upstairs," have decided it unnecessary to take the long trip to the Loop of a cold winter evening to attend a "good show." The crowds filling the New Evans- ton prove that the work of the Min- turn Players creates an illusion that is entertaining and at the same time compelling. The plays themselves pre- sent to the capacity audiences pictures of modern social life that are amusing and none the less realistic. Perhaps we ourselves belong to the "best peo- ple"--at any rate some of our ac- quaintances do--and come down to earth only after a series of distressing, but salutary, experiences. An evening with the New Evanston company helps one to lessen the shock. The feminine screams that rent the air during the giving of "The Cat and the Canary" made it very plain that the ladies and girls present were having a perfectly wonderful time. The breathless attention with which the unraveling of the horrible mystery was followed testified to the excellent stage performance. "The Family Upstairs" announced as a "rip-roaring farce comedy for laughing purposes only," is fully up to this description. Again we saw our- selves and our neighbors and had a grand time. The play for next week is "Just Married." Guest Speaker at Meeting of the Friends in Council Mrs. Auguste Babize of 484 Sheri- dan road, Glencoe, as president, pre- sided over the meeting of the Friends in Council of Evanston, Friday, Jan- uary 7, when it met at the Orring- ton hotel. A discussion of current events at 11 o'clock, with Mrs. Olga Hansen as the speaker on "Opera," was followed by an address by Mrs. M. H. Lieber of Winnetka, on parliamentary pro- cedure. Luncheon followed, and the afternoon was devoted to guest speak- ers. Mr. Habestrow of - the Bryn Mawr school of Music in Chicago, gave a talk on different phases of vocal ex- pression. And included in the guests of the organization were Mrs. John Vennema of 849 Willow road, Winnetka, chair- man of the art committee of the tenth district. Mrs. Coleman, art chairman of the Illinois Federation of Women's clubs, and Mrs. Leigh, art chairman of the tenth district last year. The program was in charge of Mrs. Lewis A. Peck of Evanston, who is program chairman. However, the ar- ranging of the program was in the hands of Mrs. F. E. Mitchell, art chair- man for the Friends, and Mrs. E. F. Welge, music chairman.
