Smith's Delicatessen Phone 112 A very MUSIC CLUB BRINGS "ENGLISH SINGERS" Famous Group to Appear in Fourth of 1926-27 Artist- Re- cital Series Monday, Feb. 14 Monday, February 14, will be the date of the fourth concert in the cur- rent Artist-Recital series staged under auspices of the Winnetka Music club. At that time "The English Singers" of London, will be heard in concert at the New Trier High school auditorium. These singers appeared in America for the first time in 1925. After a few appearances, they were suddenly and unavoidably called back to London. It follows that they are not yet so well known in America as are the other famous artists appearing in this series, vet the subscribers, discriminating mu- sicians as well as lay listeners, may look forward with confidence to a great treat when the English Singers give their concert here. The fact that Mrs. F. S. Coolidge sponsored and brought to this country this group of ensemble singers is, of itself, a sufficient guarantee of their work. It will be remembered that Mrs. Coolidge is the founder of the Berkshire String quartet, the Pittsfield Music Festival, and the Elschuco trio, which last takes its name from Mrs. Coolidge's initials. She has ever been a patron of American composers, and has donated many prizes for Ameri- can compositions. Her most recent gift to Chicago has been a series of Chamber Music concerts given at the Field museum on Sunday afternoons. These are open to the public without charge. The English Singers consist of six voices, three men and three women, who sing their songs seated at a table. While preserving a delightful air of in- formality, these singers give a most finished performance of ensemble sing- ing. In appearance they might be a group of song-loving friends indulging in a little music before afternoon tea, but one would have to search far to find a sextet, informal or otherwise, who could sing this music with the carefree perfection of their ensemble. The parts are thoroughly fused in the whole. There is an unrivaled oneness in spirit as well as in their performance. They possess the subtlest skill in shading. great purety in intonation, and unfal- tering adroitness in the utmost intri- cacies of vocal polyphony. Stress Folk Songs They present a large array of old composers from England, Italy and France, as well as several folksong ar- rangements. In short, while presenting music which will bring great joy to the most unassuming in musical learning, their work cannot fail to delight the critic who is of the musical elect. Those of our community who have been fortun- ate enough to hear them join in one accord with the highest praise of them. The American debut of the English Singers was made in October, 1925, at Washington, D. C., at Mrs. Coolidge's Festival at the Library of Congress. The following November, they ap- peared in New York City and their re- maining concerts in 1925, were at Yale, Harvard, Vassar, Peabody Institute, and the North Carolina Institute for Women at Greensboro. With no greater background of American performances than this, these singers have already been engaged for a great number of concerts throughout this country during 1926 and 1927.
