January 29, 1927 WINNETKA TALK 51 Jan. 12. Jan. 13. The Diary of "E. Z. LIFE" Wintering at DAVENPORT, FLORIDA A Chicago Man, with Big Mouth Bass, caught in Lake St. Charles, Davenport. Awoke with the bright sun streaming through my window and a healthy ap- petite. Received letter from M. J. P., member of Skokie Club saying he and family were leaving for Davenport last of month. Hurrah. Many a fine game of golf I have had with him. The guests are arriving at Inn in greater numbers. Looks like a big season. Everybody enthusiastic over Davenport. Don't blame them. Mrs. Life, C. F. and wife and I mo- tored to St. Petersburg returning in time for dinner. Very fine trip. The more I see of Florida; the better I like it. This hill and lake section is par- ticularly fine. Believe I like it better than other parts. Had wonderful bridge party this evening. Some good bridge players here. Makes it seem more like home. Folks are so con- genial. Must be the atmosphere. Jan. 14. Jan. 15. Jan. 16. The Diary Missed my golf yesterday. So started early today after "'bully" breakfast. Sure know how to make hot cakes here. Mrs. Life and lady guests had weon- derful game of shuffleboard. Sur- prised how Mrs. L. has improved in health. Seems more like her old self. My, buesife is great here. No worry or care. Nothing but play and eat and sleep. Seems like one round of pleasure and enjoyment. No wonder folks like living in Florida. A letter today from E. H. W., Wilmette, a member of the Illinois Country Club. He and Mrs. W. will arrive Monday, January 31st. The gold clans are gathering. Beats all how a fellow wants to eat here. Must be putting on flesh. Any- way, never felt better. C. F. let con- tract for his new home in Davenport. Says this place suits him to a "T". Guess I'll follow suit. Doesn't seem pos- sible this is middle of January. No snow or ice and no overcoat. See where Davenport Tames says Polk County will have Orange Festival next week. Will surely go. This is a live County and they say one of the richest in the state. Many week-end guests here. Fine class of people come here. The Inn has good reputation all over Florida. Have talked with many visitors. All say this is coming section of state. Agree with them. Went to see home of East Orange, N. J., family under con- struction. Certainly is beautiful. The orange groves make ideal setting for home. Have pretty Baptist church here. Attended this evening. Jan. 17. Jan. 18. Each week seems like a new page in life. Made a 91 on the links this morning. Feel my game is better. Keeps me in practice. Will surprise the boys up home next summer. Wish the Skokie crowd could be here. Every- body talks well of the Holly Hill course. Say there is none better in Florida, few as good. Another wonderful spring-like day. This weather beats anything I have ever seen. Three good meals a day. Plenty of golf. Beautiful scenery and motor trips, congenial folks, bridge parties and everything that makes life worth while. That's this place for you. What more could one ask. Have sent many pretty cards to Skokie friends. Hear a number are coming. Looks like a Skokie year for Daven- port. They'll get plenty of good water and fresh orange juice. That's a regular tonic and good for the system. I have found that out. For information and reservations write or telephone WILLIAM G.
