-- - February 5, 1927 WINNETKA TALK 39. NOTED CRITIC LAUDS | THE ENGLISH SINGERS Victor L. F. Rebmann Expresses Enthusiasm Over Group to Be Heard Here An unusually interesting comment regarding the English Singers, who are to appear in concert under auspices of the Winnetka Music club Monday evening, February 14, is the accom- panying tribute paid these remark- able artists by Victor I. F. Rebmann, president of the Eastern Music Super- visors' conference: "On November 13, I had the oppor- tunity to attend a recital by the Eng- lish Singers at Town hall, New York City. I am not given to enthuse read- ily over professional efforts in music, but the incomparable performance of these artists prompts me to write these lines, which will be enclosed in every letter sent from my office. "In the English Singers I hail true exponents of the pure art of singing, now almost entirely lost. A flawless perfection of technical detail, acquired through years of patient development, a deep insight into the humanizing factors of the music performed, and a spiritual unity resulting from absolute self-effacement of each individual and from striving for the attainment of a high ideal, contribute toward creating an ensemble with a standard of artis- tic excellence, so seldom heard in in- strumental music, almost never found in vocal performance. What the Flon- zaley quartet means to chamber mu- sic, the English Singers represent in the realm of song. "As a proof of the righteousness of my enthusiasm I cite the fact that with their exquisite singing they held a sophisticated New York matinee au- dience--which occupied every seat and overflowed into the aisles--spellbound , for two hours of contrapuntal (!) mu- sic, caused them to demand encore after encore and made them forget about catching trains and getting home for supper."
