---- Ey a Sy. EE ME i tebruary 12, 1927 WINNETKA TALK High School in Second Semester With New Courses Registration for the second semester at New Trier High school was com- pleted last week. About twenty fresh- men were received from the mid-year graduating class of the Skokie school, Winnetka. In addition to this, fifteen pupils had been énrolled during the first term, bringing the total to 1,475 students who started second semester class work Monday. Several new courses have been added that were not offered during the first semester, it was announced, among them being courses in dramatics, col- lege algebra, solid geometry, Latin- American history, household chemistry and civics. A class in fancy cooking, never before offered at the school, has been added because of the heavy de- mand for it. In addition to these, special courses covering regular work have been added for the benefit of students desiring to prepare for college board examina- tions. About forty students have en- rolled in these classes, it is said. Book Rummage Sale Is Planned by Chandler's Books that have been "rummaged through"--many of them valuable "finds," will be arranged for the temp- tation of book-lovers this weekend in the rummage sale which Chandler's book shop will put into effect today. Bargains in books for the thirsty lovers of letters have a lure all their own, and the triumph of unearthing treasures from motley lots at lowered prices is a joy known only to those to whom the fresh odor of printer's ink from the unexplored page is as the scent of gore to the hounds. English Singers Appear in Concert Monday Night The English Singers are to appear in concert at the New Trier auditorium Monday evening, February 14, under auspices of the Winnetka Music club. This concert is the fourth of the cur- rent season's series of Artist-Recitals given under the direction of the Mu- sic club. DISCUSS SUICIDES The Young Men's class of the Win- netka Congregational church, Sunday morning will discuss, "How One's Idea of God Affects His Attitude To- wards Life." The subject, Rev. Thom- as A. Goodwin, leader of the class an- nounces, has been suggested by re- cent accounts of so many suicides among college students. Leather Shield Is Award in Scout February Events A leather shield which will be award- ed for the first time during the early part of March, for the most efficient Boy Scout troop program carried out during February in the north shore Scout area, is stimulating considerable : interest among the various troops, it is reported. The eight points which will || be taken into consideration in the judging are the method of planning the weekly meeting night program, tne emphasis placed on out-door ac- tivities, the initiative of the patrols in conducting themselves, the advance- ment within the patrols and the troop, the growth of the troop, the interest, the work of the troop, shown by adults, the business management, and the special events. Each troop will make a written re- port, at the end of the month, and the decision made by a representative com- mittee of Scout leaders. Joseph Sears Pupils to Boost Near East Funds The pupils of the Joseph Sears school, Kenilworth, have adopted the Golden Rule policy of making other people happy and have joined the Val- entine week movement inaugurated by the Near East Relief to raise funds throughout the public schools of the land. The children's donations of pen- nies, nickles and dimes, enclosed in ap- propriate envelopes, will be deposited in a Valentine box to go forward in a dual capacity of a Valentine and a messenger of relief to the children of the Bible Land. Mrs. Henry Riggs Rathbone of Kenilworth, wife of the Congressman- at-large from Illinois was a guest re- cently at the Congressional club in Washington, D. C., before which she gave readings of her original poems. Mrs. Rathbone has been much in de- mand in Washington social circles, according to word received from the National Capital. road, is expected to return from the Evanston hospital the early part of next week.
