"The tests and trials of God's servants, though they rumble a little in our ears, as did the wagons that Joseph sent from Egypt to fetch Jacob, bring blessings to us. Those wagons came to take Jacob down to a land where he should behold the face of his beloved, and should be with him all his life; and our trials come to prepare us for the glorious meeting with our Lord. God sends us letters in black- edged envelopes, but they are all love- letters; and the blacker the letters out- side, the brighter they are inside." The Missionary Activities of the Missouri Synod, Lutheran Church The Missouri Synod of the Lutheran Church carries on mission work at home and abroad. At home among the Negroes and Indians, and also the deaf-mutes. The Synod also carries on very exten- sively its missionary activities among the unchurched of this country, especially in the rural districts of the West and North- west. Abroad the Synod does mission work in so-called Christian lands: Brazil, Argentine, Isle of Pines, Hawaii, Mexico, France, Germany, England, Denmark, etc. The Missouri Synod's work in heathen lands is centered in India and China. The Synod has 835 missionaries in its various missionary fields--out of every three ministers in the Church, one is a mission- ary. The Lutheran Church-- Not Luther's Church The Lutheran Church is not built upon Martin Luther nor any personal and priv- ate teachings of Martin Luther, but upon the Word of God as revealed in the Bible. Luther did not found or create a new re- ligion but restored to its purity the Gos- pel of Jesus Christ. Luther annunciated no new doctrine or teaching, but stressed the old Bible Truths, especially the supremacy and authority of the Scriptures and justifica- tion by faith.
