a March 5, 1927 WINNETKA TALK MEET VARIED DEMAND Drama, Opera and Basketball tourna- ment March Offering to Friends of New Trier High School By G. W. C. Ever busy New Trier High school is to be busier than usual during the month of March when it will sponsor three quite different events which will appeal to various types of people. The first event of these is the basketball tournament at Waukegan which is to take place on Saturday, December 12. Because of the en- thusiasm over this game and the prob- ability that New Trier's fine team will win, the second event which is a pro- gram to be presented by the New Tiier Tri-ship club and which was to have taken place the same evening, has been postponed until Saturday, March 19. The third event is to take place on Saturday, March 26, and is a pre- sentation of the annual freshman- sophomore play of the New Trier Dramatic club. The Tri-ship club, which is the New Trier boys' get-together organization, is going to present on the eveniiig of March 19 a one-act opera and a one- act play, the casts of both consisting entirely of boys. The opera is to be "Trial by Jury" by Gilbert and Sulli- van, and like all the operas of those two well-knowns is full of good plot and sprightly tunes. The story in- volves a breach of promise suit in which a fair lady named Angelina 1s suing one Edwin. The scene is a court room; and there are lawyers and jury- men and a judge, to say nothing of a flock of bridesmaids who will flirt with the aforementioned jury. Present Comic Opera Laughable incidents appear often during the course of the opera, one of which is the fight among the gentle- men present concerning who shall sup- port the languishing form of the fair Angelina, an honor which would seem to involve much labor inasmuch as Angelina, as portrayed by Stan Sher- man, is broad and heavy and solid. At last things are straightened out, how- ever, and the judge decides after hear- ing the defendant's splendid arguments and sgeing Angelina's pitful face that the only way out is to marry the girl himself. Which decision trial and the opera. The principal characters in the cast of this light opera are as follows: Angelina, San Sherman; Edwin, Clif- ton Darling; the Judge, John West; Counsel for the Defense, Bill Gibson; Foreman of the Jury, Bill Clore. The identity of the persons who are to be the bridesmaids is being kept secret. However, it can be said that they will be very fair to look upon and extremely graceful. The play to be given with this opera is Lord Dunsany's drama, "Night at an Inn," well-known for its tenseness and dramatic plot. It is the story of the revenge worked on a group of men who have stolen a jewel from a sacred ends the ELMER D. This drama will serve to balance the lightness of the one- act opera, Offer Garnett Play The third event on New Trier's March schedule will be the freshman- sophomore presentation of "Master Will of Stratford: or a Midwinter Night's Dream," written by Mrs. Eugene Garnett of Evanston. This play, the author of which is well- known along the north shore, is a charmingly clever fantasy embodying one of Shakespeare's dreams. It is well-suited to the abilities of the New Trier underclassmen, and it is certain- ly worthy of ending New Trier's busy March program. CHRISTIAN SCIENCE SERVICE The lesson sermon at First Church of Christ, Scientist, on Sunday morn- ing, March 6, wil! be "Man." Service will be held in the Masonic temple at 708 Elm street, at 11 o'clock, Sunday school at 9:35 o'clock and the testimonial meeting is held on Wed- nesday evening at 8 o'clock.
