March 12, 1927 WINNETKA TALK 17 OPERA, DRAMA CLAIM ATTENTION AT N. T. Tri-Ship Production and Annual Sophomore-Freshman Play Play in Rehearsals By G. W. C. Time flies on, and New Trier High school becomes busier and busier. At present there are two big pro- jects on foot in which the New Trier students are to participate. One is the Tri-ship club's presentation of a one-act play and a one-act opera, and the other is the New Trier Dramatic club's presentation of "Master Will of Stratford," this year's freshman-sopho- more play. If one -should take a peep at the first project he would see many stu- dents and several members of the fac- ulty almost "working their heads off." The Tri-ship club is to give "Trial by Jury," a delightful opera by Gilbert and Sullivan, and "A Night at an Inn," hair-raising play by Lord Dunsany. At rehearsals for the first piece, one could hear a jury singing and a bride singing and a bridgroom singing, to say nothing of a judge and some law- yers who also have powerful lungs. Then if one should stay at a rehearsal long enough, he would learn that all the trouble was over a breach of prom- ise suit in which the fair Angelina was suing one Edwin. One would see Mrs. Marian Cotton, head of the N. T. Music department, directing the singing and Miss Elizabeth Stanwood, dramatic coach, directing the acting. And in all probability one could see Mr. Frisbie,. faculty sponsor of the Tri-ship club, going thither and yon holding important-looking papers. Interpret Dunsany's Mysticism A peep at a rehearsal of "A Night at an Inn" would reveal a cast of ex-] perienced amateur actors working hard to interpret Dunsany's mysticism. Perhaps things might seem a little confusing with no scenery and stage hands sort of breaking out all over the place, but one would be happy in the thought that on March 19, when the play is given, everything will run as smooth as clockwork. Then there is that second project, the freshman-sophomore play. Any- one would be tempted to take a good long peep at preparations for that. Rehearsals, which are being carried on under the direction of Miss Stan- wood, are delightfully entertaining, as is the play itself. First of course, the on-looker would spot Miss Stanwood perched in one or another of her favorite roosts in the auditorium. watching the players with eager eyes. Then he would see the players them- selves enjoying the merriment of the play in which they act. A Merry Play And the play is merry. It relates a dream that Master Will Shakespeare, aged twelve, had on New Year's Eve; a dream that was supposed to have been the basis for "A Midsummer Night's Dream." In his dream Titania and Oberon appear and many fairies and elves who get all mixed up with Queen Elizabeth and a neighbor friend of Will's. And there is a witch who chants the most fascinating charms and a merry peddler who steals every- thing from a baby to the Queen's crown. Thus does this project go merrily and busily on; and no doubt a chance visit to a rehearsal would instill in one the desire to go to New Trier auditor- ium on March 26, and see this fresh- man-sophomore presentation.
