In fact, no type has been repeated within two years. With a membership of some 3,000, it is extraordinarily difficult to find plays which all 3,000 will like, but it has been hoped to have at least three plays out of the four each year that members will especially enjoy. But few people in going to the professional theater in Chicago find more than three productions out of every four that they particularly enjoy. The fact that this policy has been successful lies in the small percentage of turn-over in the membership each year. This season less than fifteen per cent of last year's members failed to resubscribe. Produce Plays First Time The guild has further adopted a policy of producing plays for the first time in Chicago and even though four classics have been produced, one each year, not any of the sixteen plays has been given in this vicinity previous to the Guild productions. A third policy has been in the selec- tion of the casts. Seldom has anybody appeared in more than one production each year and when this rule has been broken it has been done only in the case of an emergency or a special sit- uation. Although the guild has a large group of seasoned players that have played with it in the past, five new actors out of seven are being used in the cast for "Ariadne." This has been done in order to give a large number of people an opportunity to act, and to keep variety and freshness in the personality of each production. In the cast of "Ariadne" Mrs. Laird Bell and Abram Mendenhall are the two who have played before, although Mr. Mendenhall has not played for two years. Mrs. Richard Bentley in the title role, Laura Thompson, Rosa- mund Coffin. Lawrence Norem and George Bartlett are all making their first appearance with the guild. Aleyn Burtis, who has designed and executed the scenery for the past two and half years, is designing the scenery for this, and it will excel any of the other interior scenes of recent years.
