pos vr i 4 March 12, 1927 WINNETKA TALK 43 -- Stage and Screen News and Reviews VILLAGE THEATER Leon Errol, the inmmiwble chief laugh producer in "Louie the Four- teenth" which played in the city re- cently, makes his first appearance on the screen in "A Lunatic at Large," to be presented at the Village on Monday and Tuesday. The plot unfolds the adventures of a hobo who is tricked into an insane asylum in the place of a demented mil- lionaire. His associations with the "nuts" of the place, his thrilling escape, his mad jump from a dirigible, three thousand feet above the ground, and strung with some of the most cleverly devised "gags" ever filmed. Dorothy Mackaill, the bewitching blonde beauty, who is undoubtedly on the verge of stardom, has the featured feminine part. Kenneth MacKenna is the hero of the love story in the show. In addition there is an eye-soothing shot of some of Ziegfield's beauties from "Louis the XIVth," in which Errol was being starred on Broadway when the picture was made. J. Storer Clouston's famous tales supplied the plot of "The Lunatic." In Warner Bros." production, "The Third Degree," which will be shown on Wednesday and Thursday, Dorlores Costello plays one of the most color- ful and dramatic roles of her career. Under the sympathetic guidance of the great European director, Michael Curtiz, she appears as Annie Daly, daughter of a circus daredevil and a bareback rider. There is a short pro- logue presenting these antecedents. Then the story proper opens upon the love affair of Annie, a trapezist in a Coney Island sideshow, and Howard Jefferies, Jr., scion of an ancient New York family. They are informally married and Howard takes his bride home expect- ing a warm welcome for her radiant Village Theatre WILMETTE, ILL. Your Home Theater RE B. In battle with the desert, his fight to wrest a living from the arid wastelands, is the back- ound into which is woven Zane Grey's story, "The Mysterious Rider," to be shown on Friday and Saturday. The fast riding Jack Holt plays the title role of Bent Wade, whose life is in danger at the hands of the home- steaders because of his suspected du- plicity. The sequences, in which he proves his innocence, at the same time gaining them back their meagre lands which they were in danger of losing, form one of the most exciting motion pictures of the year. Man's never-ending VARSITY THEATRE The famous "Hollywood Music Box Revue," known to thousands of globe trotters as one of the best shows west of Broadway, makes its film debut in "An Affair of the Follies," the gay picture of theatre and night club life in which Billie Dove, Lewis Stone and Lloyd Hughes are featured at the Var- sity Monday and Tuesday. To get the proper atmosphere for his picture of a show girl's romance, mar- riage and subsequent return to the stage, Al Rockett, who produced this gem of comedy-romance for First Na- tional engaged the facilities of the famous West Coast musical revue. The theatre, the principals, the chorus gir's and the scenery were all put into the picture and critics agree that the re- vue shown on the screen is as engag- ing as any that ever trod the boards. What is said to be Douglas MacClean's latest and best comedy, "Let It Rain," will be shown on Wed- nesday and Thursday. In order that the beautiful forest settings of the production, which by the way stars Rin-Tin-Tin, might be brought to the screen in all their na- tural loveliness, light was reflected by a new and clever arrangement of mir- rors and reflectors. To reproduce the richness which natural sunlight alone gives, reflections were cast in this man- ner as far as half a mile. Jason Robards, Dorothy Dwan, Tom Santschi, Billy Kent Schaeffer, Nan- ette and Rin-Tin-Tin, Jr., are mem- bers of the exceptional cast. The picture will be shown on Friday and Saturday.
