REMOVAL CLOSING OUT 800-802 Elm Street Winnetka SEES LEPERS CURED IN HINDU COLONIES Rev. Clarence E. Wolsted, Win- netka Mission Worker, Revels in Work Among Patients Editor's note: Readers of WINNETKA TALK, and especially those who are asso- ciated with the Winnetka Congregational church, will be interested in the follow- ing story from the pen of the Rev. Clar- ence E. Wolsted, minister of that church, in India. Mr. Wolsted promises to send along other interesting accounts of his work. By Clarence E. 'Wolsted Herewith I send a story which per- haps you can use. To me it 'is the best news in a long time. A young man 24 years old has sent to us a letter of gratitude and the reason back of it is he has been cured of leprosy. Think of it, that dreadful disease feared through the ages is being con- quered. It was the --l i SCOUrge 'above all G. S. Packian that I dreaded dur- : ; ing our first months in India. In fact, the sight of .a leper left me rather numb. We had read of some missionaries who, on arrival in India, had been given charge of a leper asylum as part of their job. That was all very well for them, but certainly it was not to be our lot, we thought, yet the second job voted upon me was to have charge of an asylum of 200 patients. Manama- dura was the last place we wanted to | be sent to, because the asylum was only one mile from the bungalow. But the Mission thought otherwise, and it is part of the morale to go or do ac- | cording to the vote of the body, and do so happily. Most Interesting Task Strange to say we have spent four and one-half years now and that work that we shunned has been the most interesting of all. this year there has been a movement to move us into the have said our choice was to stay at the job. The reason is not far to seek. Hope is now the gleaming star that lights up this formerly gloomy and hopeless task. The name has now been changed to Dayapuram hospital, which means "a gift of mercy." Six years ago this boy, G. S. Packian, came to us from Ceylon. The slogan seemed to be then, "He who enters here leaves all hope behind." But in the meantime the new treatments were being perfected, and gradually the 18 year old lad began to respond. One by one the leprous spots began to disappear. In the hospital he learned to play the small organ so he could play for the church services. He also helped in the school for children and became interested in gardening. Bad- minton, a popular game here in India, was introduced and this helped him to SQUARE Reb r Have Your Shoes Rebuilt! No longer could the world say, "Unclean! unclean!" Once long ago Jesus of Nazareth touched the lepers and helped them. Now again the miracle had been performed. You can well imagine the joy it was to help him get started at work. He is 24 years old, but I believe he will make up for lost time. I enclose his letter has gone out to a village school to fill a temporary va- cancy. In June he will enter the train- ing school to complete his education, and to aid him I secured a scholarship He sent the letter to me, but I feel that it is meant for the people of Winnetka, because this is part of vour extension work. Letter of Gratitude: Respected and Dear Sir: Before I commence to pen this let- ter I thank you very much for your kind helps done to me. Surely it is God's mercy that you have shown such kindness against me. I again thank you very much for the same. Now I am an assistant teacher in Kavandanpatty, A. N. C. C. Kallars special school, which is very near Usilanpatty. The Pastor and the Villagers are all very kind with me. I am taking my food in the Club which takes Rs 12 per month. The Pastor also advised me to do like that. Today I am sending my Photo to Mr. Lockwood with a letter regarding all about my state. My humble sdalaams to you. Yours Most obediently, 27-1-27 G. S.
