May 7, 1927 WINNETKA TALK RAVINIA OPERA WILL OPEN DOORS JUNE 25 Mary Lewis and Lucretia Bori Among Outstanding Stars to Be Heard This Season After months of careful planning the multitude of details which go into the o-- making of an opera season have heen marshalled into order and Louis Eck- stein makes first announcement concerning the season of Ravinia opera and concerts for 1927. During the months which have elapsed since the close of the last Ravinia season, the problem of making the season of 1927 more magnificent in every way than was its predecessor, has occupied Mr. Eckstein's attention. The very pinnacle of art was reached last vear, and to surpass that record loomed like an almost impossible task. But now comes the formal announcement of all that is in store, and it gives eloquent testimony that Ravinia will set a new record for itself. The season will open this year on June 25 and will continue until Sep- tember 5. The artists engaged are = representative of the best that could be found anywhere in the world and the list of operas will include not only the standard works, but several inter- esting revivals and novelties. Many old friends among the singers--nearly his | est roles this summer and will be heard | for the first time as Santuzza in "Cav- { alleria Rusticana" and Amelia in "The Masked Ball." Secure Mary Lewis | Mary Lewis, a young American so- prano with a good European reputa- tion behind her, is among the new- comers of the soprano division. [Flor- ence Macbeth, charming coloratura who has won many friends at Ravinia during the last several seasons is to return for her favorite parts, and Tina Paggi, a youthful but experienced singer, has been added to the color- atura section. An important announcement is to the effect that Julia Claussen, contralto, is to make her Ravinia debut this year. She has a splendid reputation both in Europe and America and will be heard 'n many of the great contralto roles such as Amners in "Aida" and Azucena in "Il Trovatore." "LaNavar- hie . So raise" and Delila in "Samson and Delila" are likewise in her repertoire. Mme. Bourskaya, mezzo-soprano, who has been on the Ravinia roster for five years, will again be heard in the roles for which she is famous, which include those also assigned to Mme. Claussen. Gladys Swarthout, a young singer who has given good account of herself, is a Ravinia newcomer. The fact that Giovanni Martinelli will again be heard at Ravinia is matter for congratulation. This great tenor is an outstanding figure in the world of opera. He has a vocal equipment that is superb combining tonal beauty and dramatic singing in equal degrees. musicianship, have won him hosts of friends at Ravinia. Danise Leading Baritone At the head of the baritone con- tingent will again stand Giuseppe Danise, whose reputation as bel canto singer is international. Mr. Danise has, by the sheer richness of his voice, won the continual plaudits of Ravinia pa- trons for several seasons. Mario Basiola, a young baritone who is like- wise a Ravinia favorite is to return. Leon Rothier and Virgilio Lazzari, two world famous singers and actors, will again be the manstays of the basso section, the former in the French, the latter in the Italian works.
