June 18, 1927 WINNETKA TALK 11 Announce Program for Commencement at Columbia School An interesting interview was had with Kathleen Air, principal of the Winnetka branch of the Columbia School of Music in which she gave an outline of the plan for Commence- ment week to be given in Chicago by her school. The school has its own recital hali and she says that three of the events will be given in its own hall and, be- ginning on next Tuesday night, the members of the classes will take part in a concert by the accompanying and coaching department under the direc- tion of Robert Mcdonald. On Wednes- day evening, original compositions will be presented by students of the theory department. The program is in charge of the well known composer, and theor- ist, Adolf Brune. On Thursday eve- ning the concert will be given by the Ensemble department under the direc- tion of Ruth Ray, who is one of the most prominent women violinists of the country. This program is also given by members of the classes and will represent the piano, violin, viola and cello departments and will include several trios and one quintet. One of the interesting features of the week is the Children's Commence- ment concert and Honor program to be given Saturday afternoon at 2:30 in the Gold Room of the Congress hotel. Miss Air says that all the children who appear on this program were selected by competition before the directors of the school and those to appear are to be congratulated for the excellence of their playing. The Columbia School Children's chorus, under the direction of Helen Protheroe will render a group of choruses, after which the director of the school, Clare Osborne Reed, and assistant director, Gertrude H. Mur- dough, assisted by Miss Air, will award the Academic and Elementary certifi- cates. The concert will close with the singing of the Columbia School Song. Miss Air calls special attention to the closing feature of Commencement week which will be given on Saturday night and will also be held in the Gold Room. On this occasion the program will open with the conferring of de- grees, diplomas and certificates by the director of the school, assisted by members of the faculty, to be followed by the String Ensemble of forty mem- bers, under the direction of Ludwig Becker. City Tots Revel at Annual Frolic on College Campus The north shore becoming practically synonymous in the minds of a large group of children down in the heart of Chicago, who revel for weeks in the glamour of an- ticipation or remembrance of the an- nual children's frolic given for them by the students of the National Kinder- gzarten and Elementary college. Flow- ers, music, green grass, sunshine, laughter and play--what more could one ask for! The frolic has been held each spring for the past thirteen years, each year with an increasing number of children. Four hundred and sixty arrived via busses and autos Tuesday afternoon, June 7, and the green grass without the annoying "keep off" signs, was hailed with delight. There were songs and happy games and dances around the balloon decked poles on the cam- pus; ice cream in little cups accom- panied by small spoons--which were frequently discarded in favor of pink- tipped tongues; and through it all, the happy, lilting music of the band. Suddenly down the winding drive, like rainbow-hued clouds floating and drifting in the wind, the balloons ap- peared--and in another moment were tugging and dancing at the end of the strings clutched tightly in chubby lit- tle fists. As the music changed to a march a processional was formed and with balloons and banners, curls and sashes flying in the breeze, off the children skipped and danced and marched to the busses, where nosegays of flowers for each child partially compensated for the loss of the green grass. and paradise are | MARINELLO | BEAUTY | SHOP 733 Elm Street | For Appointment Phone Winnetka 822 Going Fishing?
