State Bank and Trust Company LS ORRINGTON AT DAVIS Established 1874 EVANSTON, ILLINOIS New Building Symbolizes Strength and Hospitality Architects Express Idea of Cordiality Size and Simplicity of Structure, To- gether With Great Doorway, Voice Bank's Spirit of Welcome Strength and hospitality are admir- ably expressed in the new building of the State Bank and Trust company just completed on the old Fountain Square site. The Italian Renaissance treatment of the large pilasters along the front, handled with larger propor- tions than one usually sees, and the | simplicity of the composition in gener- al have been given special attention in order to follow out the desire of the building committee to express these qualities. The human, cordial element which this bank in particular en- deavors to show its customers has been carried out in every detail of tiie archi- tecture. The building is of granite and Bed- ford limestone. The ornamentation is such as not to interfere with the effect of hospitality and dignity of the whole, but rather to accentuate the main fea- tures, as the entrance to the building, which is surrounded by a charming lace work of carved decorations, the spandrel sections above the shops sep- arating the commercial element below from the monumental bank portion above. The doorway, immense in width and height, symbolizes the bank's wel- come to its patrons; it is one of the most monumental features of the building and has a special decoration of wrought iron work and a lantern hanging from the summit of the arch. The huge pilasters with ornamental capitals divide the Orrington avenue and Davis street side of the building into five sections each. Between these pilasters, on the bank floors, are spa- cious windows and on the street floor are shops conducted by private con- cerns. The bank is so arranged that the en- tire space on the second floor is given up to banking purposes, similar to the arrangements in many great metro- politan banks. One of the reasons for providing shops on the first floor was to retain an active live character to the exterior of the bank through the entire day and evening, to avoid lack of interest about corners devoted solely to bank pur- poses. Brilliant Color Patterns Enrich Ceilings in Bank Brilliant color decorations are used artistically on the banking floor of the new State Bank and Trust company building. The old coin motifs, the United States seal and the symbol of the State Bank and Trust company are incorporated in plaster decorations on the walls and ceiling. In the customers' space over the main entrance stairway is projected one of the richest colored ceilings in the building, as rich as the famous Villa Madama dome ceiling. The antiquing process has been ap- plied throughout, toning down the colors to give the bank the appearance of age. : Wide Stairway Leads to Banking Floor PHOTO BY LEHLE The inviting entrance stairway to the bank's main banking floor is not- able because of the manner in which the stone of the steps is employed to give the appearance of a carpet, and for the hand-wrought ironwork and the light- ing fixtures. Bank Invites All to Visit New Home Will Hold Open House for Two Days So That Evanstonians May Have Chance to Inspect Structure By WIRT WRIGHT (President, State Bank and Trust Com- pany) After two years of construction the State Bank and Trust company opens its quarters for inspection by the pub- lic on Friday and Saturday of this week. An invitation is extended to all the residents of Evanston and the north shore to view the departments of the bank now placed completely at the service of the public. This has been an interesting con- struction operation. The necessity of building the structure in two sections has not only prolonged the task, but has constantly intrigued the interest of the public in the progress of the work through natural human curiosity to see what would happen next. That curiosity may now be com- pletely and finally satisfied. The stock- holders, directors and officers of the bank will be delighted to have the citizens of Evanston call during open house period for a preliminary view, and it is unnecessary to add, hope that first visits may be followed by many others, so that the beauty of the build- ing, its appointments and its prepara- tions for community service may be fully appreciated. All departments may be visited from 9:00 A. M. to 9:00 P. M. Friday and Saturday, the 24th and 25th. Visitors will be received by the officers in the main bank lobby on the second floor. From there an opportunity will be given to visit the Directors' room, Trust department, Vault department and as nearly as possible to see all of the features of the building in which visitors will be interested. Music is to be furnished by a string orchestra. While the officers anticipate a large attendance, arrangements have been made so that callers will receive care- ful attention with the least possible confusion. Rest Room for Women Is Richly Furnished, Decorated For the accommodation of women space above the main entrance of the new State Bank and Trust company is given over as a rest room. Located on the main floor of the bank it is an easily accessible retreat from the busi- ness section. The large window behind it is form- ed by the glass of the ornamental arch doorway and affords an attractive background as well as view onto Foun- tain square. The ceiling will be of the richest color work in the bank, using reds, greens, yellows and blues only slightly antiqued. In four ovals paint- ings are to be inserted. Thick rugs and comfortable furniture enhance the quiet attractiveness of this section. Inside the view is onto the orna- mental stairway. There is no wall di- viding this space, but the fact that it is behind the entrance separates it from the rest of the main lobby. on -- TR" ny
