Schuman, formerly of "The Masterpiece of Man is to live to. the purpose," said Poor Richard. And it is for this sort of masterpieces - masterpieces in human living - that we strive first, here at the Academy. The young lives that are with us from day to day need beauty of character before they can create beauty with brush or pencil. So we set a definite goal, keep a definite routine, make art a way of living with demands to be faced honestly. The purpose of our teaching is to teach, not merely to oversee. And we try to inspire in all the desire to 'learn as well as to instruct with competence those of especial talent. me EVANSTON ACADEMY OF FINE ARTS Carlson Building, 636 Church St. Greenleaf 1674 . CARL SCHEFFLER, Director Fall Session Sept. 6 Summer Session Mrs. Edwin N. Johnson to Direct Art Exhibit Mrs. Edwin Nathaniel Johnson of Evanston has been chosen director of the 1927 exhibit of the works of Illi- nois artists which the All-Illinois So- ciety of the Fine Arts will foster the first fortnight in next November at the Bismarck hotel, Chicago. The purpose of the exhibition will be to give opportunity to Illinois ar- tists to bring before the public their best achievements, and to that end many prizes of considerable value are offered. The plan rather follows that of the Hoosier salon in which many Evanstonians have been actively inter- ested in seasons past. Artists who were born in Illinois, who received their art education in this state or who are now residents of Illinois are qualified to compete for entrance. Af- ter the Chicago showing the exhibi- tion will be taken to various cities throughout the state. Mrs. Charles R. Dalrymple, 5009 Blackstone avenue, is president of the society. Summer Registration Exceeds 2000 This Session While registration figures from the several schools of Northwestern uni- versity are not yet available, officials there are convinced that attendance this season is to run beyond any of re- cent years for the term. This influx of ambitious men and women was in- dicated as being unusually large, at the assembly in Fisk Hall, Tuesday fore- noon when welcome was cordially given them by President Walter Dill Scott and members of the summer faculty. All downstairs seats in the chapel hall and the gallery seats were filled, while some were unable to be present. In former years practically only the lower floor seats have been occupied. Director Clyde L. Grose is now quite optimistic that registration in all the schools may exceed the high ak of 2,000. Director Grose intro- duced President Scott to the summer students who greeted prexy with real enthusiasm. The historical relations be- tween Northwestern and Chicago and Evanston were first stressed by the president, who then emphasized the | good comradeship which always has prevailed at all summer schools on the | Evanston campus. | The Misses Katherine and Edith [Dillon of 814 Prospect avenue return- [ed Tuesday after spending a week at |the Alpha Phi house party. The party {was held near Holland, Mich., this year. Miss Katherine Dillon has as her guest over the week-end, Miss Polly Pietch of Evanston.
