Theodore Spacek, Prop. 10 Carlton Annex Ph. Winn, 614 For Friendship's Sake HERE'S something in the congenial atmos- phere of The Central Cafeteria that en- courages good friendship. And that's not all --the most delicious summer dishes; quick un- obtrusive service; cleanliness that is irreproach- able. And when the weather is too hot for com- fort. it's always cool here. Plenty of overhead fans--plenty of big windows--plenty of cool- ing things to eat and drink! Personal Supervision of Fred Miller CENTRAL CAFETERIA Nelson Building Central Avenue, East of Wilmette Avenue WILMETTE How to Adjust Child Is Topic of Speaker Properly to judge a child's behavior | and enable him to adjust himself so-! cially, there must be a complete ac- count of his physical development, his | social background and his psychologi- cal reactions. This belief was pronounced by Miss | Katherine Haskell of the behavior | clinic of the Illinois Institute for Juven- | ile Research when she addressed the summer student body of the National Kindergarten and Elementary college last week. She discussed "The Personality of the Child" as outlined in the behavior clinic. She gave interesting illustra- tions of cases handled there, bringing out the points of her discussion. Firemen Servicing Trucks Against Late Summer Needs Work was started early this week by the Winnetka firemen under the direc- tion of Fire Chief Houren on the gen- eral servicing of both of the trucks in preparation for the increased fire-haz- ards of the late summer and fall. All wearing parts and unions are being carefully checked, the motors cleaned and tuned and the various parts of the equipment gone over for possible defects. While both of the trucks are in excellent condition, it is considered expedient, according to Chief Houren, to go over the engines at the present time when calls are the least nu- merous, rather than run the risk of pos- sible breakdowns later on. School Experiments Get Qualified O. K. of Professor Stout Whether it is the business of the teacher to carry on experiments in education or whether no experiments should be made at all was given dis- cussion Thursday at the National Kin- dergarten and Elementary college by Prof. John E. Stout, dean of the School of Education of Northwestern univer- sity. "The General Importance and Con- trol of Educational Work" was Prof. Stout's subject. There are, he re- minded, two extremes in attitude to- wards experimental work--one assum- ing that it is all right to conduct ex- periments and that the main business of the teacher is their carrying on; the other holding that none should be made at all. \ In the appalling amount of experi- ment going on in our age, education cannot and should not try to escape it. Education has assumed such an impor- tance that educators are being forced to find the best methods of its appli- cation. Present means are wholly in- adequate, and the very nature of edu- cation calls for experiments on the part of the teacher. With the necessity great the danger also is great, he reminded, and much harm is done in permitting experi- menting by ignorant and unskilled teachers and without proper control. Public utility generating stations in Illinois produced 502201000 kilowatt- hours of electricty during Mav--an in- crease of 13 per cent over May, 1926.
