EE July 23, 1927 WINNETKA TALK 19 USE "HIGH EX" IN | WAR ON ON MOSQUITOES Soon the residents in the vicinity of the Skokie valley are to hear de- tonations and bombardments akin to "High Ex" barrages on the Western front, but there will be no cause for alarm as it will be merely a phase of the Sanitary district's warfare against mosquitoes. President T. J. Crowe and Trustee James M. Whalen and Michael Rosen- berg, who form the board of strategy in the campaign to exterminate the pests, have invoked the use of dyna- mite as part of their scheme of oper- ation. In the case of small streams and brooks where water forms in pools, thus affording breeding places for the insects, the process of "mid- channeling" will be adopted. Dyna- mite will be used in the work and it is expected that a freer flow will thus be obtained. "High Ex" crews di- rected by John T. Miller, manager of permanent plants and structures of the Sanitary district, will do the work. Dig Drainage Ditches In marshy grounds other gangs will dig drainage ditches leading to creeks and run-off channels. Debris and brush checking water flow will be re- moved. Oilers carrying spraying equipment on their backs will cover the pest-ridden areas thoroughly, and it is expected that substantial results will be obtained. The Sanitary district is working in co-operation with the Gorgas Me- morial Institute. Dr. Franklin H. Mar- tin of that organization is in constant touch with President Crowe of the Sanitary district, and technicians from the Institute are constantly in the field directing the work of the oilers and laborers. Christian Science Churches "Life" was the subject of the lesson- sermon in all Churches of Christ, Sci- entist, Sunday, July 17. The golden text was from Proverbs 16:22, "Understanding is a wellspring of life unto him who hath it." Among the citations which compris- ed the lesson-sermon was the following from the Bible: "No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one and love the other; or else he will hold to the one and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mam- mon. Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteous- ness; and all these things shall be added unto you" (Matt. 6:24, 25, 33). The lesson-sermon also included the following passages from the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," by Mary Baker Eddy: "The fact is, food does not affect the absolute Life of man, and this becomes self-evident, when we learn that God is our Life. Be- cause sin and sickness are not qualities of Soul or Life, we have hope in im- mortality; but it would be foolish to venture beyond our present under- standing, foolish to stop eating until we gain perfection and a clear com- prehension of the Living Spirit. In that perfect day of understanding, we shall neither eat to live nor live to eat" (p. 388).
