Prop. 818A ELM STREET Gas Mistaken for Water Explodes; Workman Injured When Heins Betz, of 1249 Judson avenue, Evanston, mistook a bucket of Chi | gasoline for water and dashed it on a avenue, i- | pail of live coals, an explosion resulted which seriously burned his hands and arms and ignited the residence of G. P. Racine, 561 Winnetka avenue, where the accident occurred. Betz was preparing to do some work on a water heater in the basement. He removed the live coals and some ashes from the heater, and seeing what he presumed was a bucket of water, near by, doused what proved to be gasoline on the coals. Despite his painful burns Betz carried the flaming pail to the door, ten feet away, and hurled it into the yard, which, according to Fire Chief G. M. Houren was the only thing which pre- vented serious damage to the house. The fire department, when it arrived, found only a small blaze about the door and quickly exu guts. eq tonat. Cmet Houren then turned his attention to Mr. Betz who was taken to a physician by Fireman George Liechsenring. Both hands and arms of Betz were injured, the back of one hand having all the skin burned off. Mrs. Rufus B. Stolp of 336 Warwick road, Kenilworth, and Mrs. L. M. Allen of 258 Melrose avenue, Kenil- worth, entertained some of their friends at a luncheon at the new Vista del Lago club on August 2.
