2 2) ww | $ August 27, 1927 WINNETKA TALK 33 Shore Theaters News Teatro del Lago Provides Highest Grade Productions Listed on the Teatro del Lago pro- gram for next week are "lonesome Ladies," "Metropolis," "The Covered Wagon" and "Barbed Wire." The last three pictures are excellent plays, the first a pleasant little drama. Lewis Stone is as usual at his best in "Lonesome Ladies." This vehicle promises a good evening's pastime and 'will be found adequately enter- taining. Anna Q. Nilsson plays the feminine lead. For "Metropolis" there is much to be said. The story takes us far into the future and we see a city such as might exist a thousand years from now. Skyscrapers reach toward the heavens and airplanes fly through steel canyons. Beneath the earth the workmen tend the machines that gen- erate the power needed in the city above and even farther down are lo- cated their homes. It is a fantastic dream of a phantom world and also carries a love story that is well pre- sented. Some like "Metropolis" and some do not but all agree that is is a marvelously portrayed story. Emerson Hough wrote the "Covered Wagon" and in so doing created a compelling, primitive love story con- taining all the strength of romance, the rugged charm and wilderness sweetness that characterized the coun- try in 48. The picture embodies much of this charm and is a splendid drama with few falacies and a well-rounded plot featuring Lois Wilson and War- ren Kerrigan. A detailed write up of "Barbed Wire" has previously been carried and it is necessary only to repeat that the film is at least one of Pola Negri's greatest pictures and the first good one released since she relinquished her German directors. It treats of a phase of the World war heretofore untouch- ed, the actual story of the war from an unbiased standpoint. Clive Brooks and Einar Hanson appear in support of Pola and do excellent work. Paramount to Produce Oriental Picture Soon A typical Japanese picture is soon to be started by Paramount, according to a rumor that seems to be as authen- tic as it is interesting. The fact that B. P. Schulberg, who recently return- ed from the Orient, has contracted Timmorro Kioti to make pictures for Patamount adds credence to the re- port. It is one of the prime concerns in the consideration of French history and is more or less typical of the times. To attempt to make Pompadour anything less than a tyrant, as is done in this picture, is to banish the realism of history and to make an entirely new story. * % % No incident is more famous than the extravagance of Pompadour in her preparations for a summer ball at the palace, when, in carrying out a winter setting, she had the entire garden covered with powdered sugar. Nor is there a situation more humorous than the one created by the caustic remark of the monarch of a neighboring country, "Europe is governed by two old hens"--a remark that reacted on the vanity of Pompadour and Catherine the Great of Russia and nearly precipi- tated a two point invasion by the most powerful armies of the world. In history Pompadour was the am- bitious mistress of King Louis the Fifteenth of France, but on the screen the Madame is the wronged lover of a poor poet--whose role is played by the only live actor in the cast, Antonio Moreno. She plans to elope with her poet but the king becomes suspicious and she is compelled to prove to him that her affections are for her royal papa alone. In so doing she has to hand her lover the fade-out sign and thus ends the romance. FILM "HELL'S ANGELS" Marshall Neilan and Paul Bern are sailing soon to film "Hell's Angels" in Germany, England and France. Mick- ey has a story that Howard Hughes, his backer, believes will be a sensation. Those who have heard it are of the same opinion. It will be the first Nielan picture to be made for United Artists.
