- - 4 pa October 29, 1927 WINNETKA TALK 7 Shore Theaters News EVANSTON 5 --- 0 ol "The Acquittal" Good Play Well Done, Says Jane By JANE ARNDT Miss Margery Williams has the lu- gubrious role, this week at the New Ev- anston, of the wife of Kenneth Winth- rop, who has just been acquitted of the murder of a Mr. Prentiss, benefactor and philanthropist. The play is called "The Acquittal" and is one of that holds the interest, and is exceptionally well acted. Ernest Woodward is the breezy self-assured and likeable news- paper man Joe Conway, who appears at the Winthrop home shortly after the verdict. Dr. Hammond, played by Lew J. Welch, asserts Prentiss died from an accidental overdose of strychnine. Conway manages to smuggle a note to Mrs. Winthrop in a purse, which is delivered to Miss Craig, former secre- tary of Prentiss, who was invited to his home by Winthrop at the time of his arrest to keep his wife company. 'Blue's "Bush Leaguer" | the week for the Village theater. | | In Mrs. Winthrop's boudoir later Miss | Craig reveals the contents of the note, | which says Conway knows the mur- derer. Miss Craig probes her without success, and leaves when Winthrop enters. Winthrop is dramatically confronted with the pent-up rage of his wife, who gives him a package of letters he wrote to Miss Craig, and which were given to her by Prentiss three days before his death. She says she pos- sesses the box containing the remain- ing supposedly harmless 'headache powders given to Prentiss by Winth- rop, and that an analysis proved them to be strychine. She scathingly de- nounces him for bringing his mistress --the sweet-voiced Miss Craig--to her home. Winthrop admits it all and threatens her. Conway, who has been listening, steps into the room and cor- roborates Mrs. Winthrop's accusations by stating he has had Nellie, the maid, turn over to him the deadly powders and the inserts in the envelopes Winthrop holds. "Fall of Eve" Minturn Presentation Next Week "Is Zat So," a comedy of the prize ring written by James Gleason and Richard Taber, is being presented by the Minturn Players at the Chateau this week. It has been attracting very favorable comment and its popularity no doubt has been enhanced by the release recently of the screen version of the play in which George O'Brien was featured. "Is Zat So" is a clever comedy. Love and laughter, the brilliant background of real society, and many other things are contained in the farce-comedy "The Fall of Eve" which will be presented by Harry Minturn and his players during the coming week. The central figure is Eve Hutton, the fascinating and seriously tragic wife of Ted Hutton, a rising young lawyer. One of his principal clients is a motion picture actress who had in a few years been married four times. Ted, by reason of his work, is com- pelled to spend much time in the ac- tress' company and upon this purelv business acquaintance Eve puts the worst possible construction. She re- fuses to attend the opening of a new plav in which the movie aueen is an- pearing although she knows it is necessary for her husband to be there. Heads Village Program Monte Blue surpasses most of his past characterizations in "The Bush Leaguer." It is an entirely different role than Monte ordinarily takes and it certainly is a pleasing one. As "Specs" White, the small town baseball player who makes good in Big League stuff and yet uses baseball "just for fun" while he works on his invention, Monte produces laughs a plenty. And if Monte was the only fun maker in the picture it would be quite worth- while. But while Monte carries the title role, it is Clyde Cook who really adds spice to the production. Clyde was the "one-man-band" in "Barbed Wire," | the recent Pola Negri release and he is | just as clever and just as refreshing in| "The Bush Leaguer" which is to open | | "After Midnight," Norma Shearer's | new starring vehicle for Metro-Gold- | wyn-Mayer, which will be showing next Wednesday and Thursday, is a dramatically human play of a life which begins in poverty and ends in poverty, and presents the star in a new charac terization. The story was written and directed by Monta Bell and tells the love of a cigarette girl for a thief. In the end the thief reforms and becomes a taxi driver and their youth and romance triumphs over the evil about them. Lawrence Gray plays opposite Miss Shearer. The critics a long time ago dubbed Jackie Coogan as the greatest living child actor. But when he was reported as "growing up" they shook their heads in doubt and secretly murmured that his days were about numbered. The extent of the surprise that Jackie handed them in "The Bugle Call," which will be presented on Friday and Saturday, is clearly demonstrated by the way the little chap takes hold of this semi-grown-up role and puts it over. 0 De 2S Village Theatre WILMETTE, ILL.
