we November 5, 1927 WINNETKA "FALK 43 Child's Own Library Becomes Rare Treasure Who is there who does not still leaf over tenderly from time to time a few precious volumes which constituted his personal library as a child and from which he first learned the love of books? The titles may not have been drawn directly from a selected list of children's readings: one such library comes to mind in 'which the places of honor were held by Omar Khayyam, F.dgar Allen Poe, Shelley and Hans Christian Andersen. Their bindings and illustrations had probably been their first charm; their contents be- came an inexhaustible storehouse of beauty to which the child could return again and again. And if they were not just the choice a reading expert might have made for the child, they were all good books, which he prided as his very own, and whose possession inspired him to go on and gather others to keep them company as the years passed. The celebration of Children's Book Week, November 13 to 19, could not be better marked than by the starting of a Child's Own Library in every home where one does not yet exist. Nothing can ever make up to the boy or girl for the absence of these choice companions in his youth. He may, and should be a member of the Public library, but library books and personal books fill two entirely different needs. The former provide the varied every- day mental fare which is indispensable to his intellectual expansion; the lat- ter should bring him that sense of respect for and joy in books as in- dividuals which the connoisseur feels. He will want to preserve their pages fresh and their bindings throughout the years while his delight in them leads him back to read them over and over. Now while the bookstores and public libraries are showing for Children's Book Week their choicest collections of beautiful books for boys and girls, is the time to decide on the first titles for the Child's Own Book Shelf. Of course their numbers will be added to from time to time--at Christmas, on birthdays, or regularly from the family budget. And always they will be chos- en with care, as one adding each week or month a beautiful gem to a neck- lace. Harris Lecturer to Talk on the Romance of Fungi "The Romance of Fungi Life" will be the subject of six lectures to be given by Dr. Arthur Henry Reginald Buller, professor of botany at the University of Manitoba, at Northwestern under the Harris foundation, November 14 to 19. Prof. Buller is widely known for his researches on fungi and will describe some of the most recent discoveries in his lectures. His studies in the mor- phology and physiology of fungi have appeared in volumes in 1909, 1922 and 1924. It is upon the manuscript of the fourth volume, which is now well ad- vanced, that this series of lectures will be 'based. The annual lectures given under the Harris foundation are endowed by a gift of the late Norman Wait Harris of Chicago.
