November 12, 1927 WINNETKA TALK 19 WINNETKA GIRL RIDES IN BIG HORSE SHOW Miss Evelyn Shuman, Ten Years Old, to Contest for Silver Trophy When the third annual horse show of the Chicago Riding club opens No- vember 22, the list of entries will include Miss Evelyn Shuman, who, with "The Countess," her favorite mount, confidently expects to annex as her own, the much coveted silver cup posted for the event in which the contestants are children under four- teen years of age. Both Miss Evelyn and Miss Marjorie Shuman, daughters of Mr, and Mrs. John R. Shuman, of 44 Indian Hill road, Winnetka, have been riding for more than two years and are said to be two of the best riders of their age on the north shore. Miss Evelyn is ten years of age. Her sister is only a year or so her junior. In the accompanying picture the former is shown mounted on "Mic- key," one of the favorite saddle horses in the John Hartnett stables, 437 Chestnut street, Winnetka, bu in the coming show Miss Evelyn will "do her suff" on "The Countess," her favorite mount, although the Misses Shuman take turn about in riding this pair of favorites. Countess a Thoroughbred "The Countess" is a thoroughbred mare, bred for racing, but being a trifle slow for speed contests has proven a fine, spirited mount under the training of Mr. Hartnett. Many more experienced riders than the Misses Shuman have found it impossible to remain in the saddle when "The Coun- tess" puts on her best three-gaited performance. But the Misses Shuman are right at home with her, and Miss Evelyn's splendid horsemanship and the style, and spirit of "The Countess," it is expected will bring the cup in the class of their entry to Winnetka. The Misses Shuman learned to ride more than two years ago, at the Indian Hill Riding club, under the direction of John Hartnett, when the latter was in charge there. Since the opening of his stables at 437 Chestnut street, they have continued their riding under his guidance, with marked success. North Shore Day Grid Squads Set Fast Pace The football teams of the North Shore Country Day school are main- taining their winning pace and bid fair to achieve a record season of wins on which they embarked a few weeks ago. The Lightweights defeated a team from the Lake Forest Winter club, Wednesday of this week, 20 to 0, and, on Saturday of last week, the Freshman-Sophomore team from Deer- field-Shields High school went down to defeat, 35 to 0, at the hands of the North Shore team. HOME FROM EAST Mr. and Mrs. George B. Massey, 705 Sheridan road, have returned from a delightful motor trip in the East, where they visited their sons, Loren and George, Jr., at Cornell and Yale. They were guests of honor at George Jr's club tea after the Army-Yale football game. Mrs. Massey is being congratulated upon her complete recovery from a serious horseback accident early last summer. Mrs. Charles Barker, 557 Orchard lane, is in St. Luke's hospital where she underwent a serious operation. She is convalescing now and will be home soon.
