Miss Costello is cast as the daughter of a college president, who is about to lose his job because of his inability to interest athletes in com- ing to the institution. A promised gift is also to be forfeited for the same reason. The pretty and wilful lady decides to make things move, and by her personal charm wins a football team which sweeps her father's college to victory and his job to security. Each man in the team thinks he is the girl's favorite and when her duplicity is discovered high jinks follow. "The College Widow" is without doubt the most thoroughly delightful college play ever written and the film is even better than the stage version. In the cast are William Collier, Jr., Anders Ran- dolf, Douglas Gerrard, Robert Ryan, Charles Hill Mailes, Summer Getchel, Big Boy Williams, Grace Gordon and Jess Hibbs. Archie L. Mayo directed. Al Kvale will offer a novelty stage revue called "Bars and Stripes" in which a series of pleasant surprises are promised. Al and his popular orchestra will play a medley of the season's outstanding song hits and then introduce a lavish cast of talent. Two stage stars will head the cast, Bert Hanlon, veteran musical comedy comedian and Ilomay Bailey, favorite Bill-O-Fare Saturday, November 12 "The Gay Retreat" ....Teatro del Lago "Jaws of 'Steel™ iii divine Village "Chang" ..Community House, Winnetka *The=Bad Man ...... ...Chateau "The Crystal Cup" ..........Norshore Save My Child" Sunday, November 13 Out "All. It is a comedy- drama featuring the comedy team Ted McNamara and Sammy Cohen, the two marines in "What Price Glory." In this picture, however, they are said to surpass their work in the far famed war picture as "The Gay Retreat" was written especially for them by William Conselman, noted cartoonist, and Ed- ward Marshall, scenarist of comedies. The story deals with a sleep-walking doughboy and his two friends, who join the army to keep him from walk- ing into No Man's Land in his sleep. But the fun starts long before they leave for France, and continues right through the picture until the final fadeout at home after the armistice. x x x Sunday's feature will be Reginald Denny's "Out All Night" in which the star takes the role of the man about town who marries a cute little ballet dancer. Masquerading as the ship's physician, he embarks with his newly- wed wife for London where she is to take part in a production with the show troupe with which she has a con- tract. The wedding must be kept a secret, however, because of a clause in the contract. The play ends in a mad farce in mid ocean and is chuck full of laughs and entertainment. "Body and Soul" will be presented on Wednesday. * x x In the film for Thursday and Friday, "Hula," Clara Bow wins the nickname "Hula" because of her proficiency in the native Hawaiian dance. This is even more striking when it develops that she is not an Hawaiian. She was born in the Islands, the daughter of American parents, and has successfully sidestepped the "fast living" environ- ment which surrounds the Calhoun plantation. "Old Bill," her father, a lovable but dissolute man, is not re- sponsible for this. Uncle Edwin, "Hu- la's" companion since the death of her mother, has reallv brought her up to be the sweet, dashing out-of-doors girl she is. Clive Brook, leading man, as an English engineer, provides the com- plications along with a lot of love and this is the foundation for a fast moving story. George O'Brien, Virginia Valli and J. Farrell Macdonald play the leading roles in Allan Dwan's picture based on Felix Riesenberg's novel, "East Side, West Side," which will be the bill for Thursday and Friday. "Fast Side, West Side" has what is considered an excellent motion picture plot. It is rich in New York atmos- phere and surrounds the activities of a young man, reared in the poorest part of the city, who battles his way to ownership of a mansion on Fifth | avenue. All of New York's celebrated sec- tions have a part in the story. the Bowery, East Side, West Side, Hell's Kitchen, Gas House district, Red Hook Point, the Bronx. Washington Heights, Park and Fifth avenues. The leading role is a natural for George O'Brien and couldn't have fit= ted his talents anv better if the author had had him in mind when writing. The Villace has scheduled "When a Man Loves" for Monday. November 21. and "The Big Parade" for the following week.
