Children's Theater Play to Tell Story of Mock Gentleman "The Make-Believe Gentleman," an adaptation of Moliere's famous play, "Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme" will 6pen the third season of the Evanston Chil- dren's theater, December 3 and 10. The performances this year will be given in the Haven school theater, which was designed especially for the presenta- tion of children's plays. "The Make-Believée Gentleman" is a three-act play dealing with the efforts of Mr. Jourdain, a Paris shopkeeper who has suddenly become rich, to pass as a gentleman. The original play of Moliere was written after an imperial command by Louis XIV of France and was first played in his court in 1670. Its presen- tation in Evanston was suggested to Miss Winifred Ward, director of the Children's theater, by the director of the Los Angeles Children's theater, who produced it there last year with great success. French noblemen at the time of Lou- is XIV were greatly interested in Turkish customs, so the famous French playwright was ordered to write a play and include a Turkish scene. This comes when Mr. Jourdain receives a title, supposedly from the embasssies of the Sultan, after an elaborate cere- mony. In reality, a young man who loves Jourdain's daughter, but who is not considered a "gentleman" by him, has hired a band of mummers to enact the mock ceremony. "The Make-Believe Gentleman" is accompanied by music and there is dancing in many of the scenes. The Haven school orchestra, which is di- rected by B. F. Stuber, will play the score. The Northwestern chapter of Orchesus, a national dancing organiza- tion, will furnish the dancing choruses. Essay Contest Is Feature Event at Mallinckrodt High "Education Week," which was ob- served at Mallinckrodt High school last week was featured by an assembly of the students during which essays on "The Constitution of the United States," "The Evils of Atheism" and "The Value of a Catholic High School Education," were delivered. Those who read the essays were students from | each class, these being: Seniors--Helen | Dupre, Elizabeth Faetz, Anna Braun, and June Hoffman; Junior --Marjorie Koenig; Sophomores--Elsie Dodo and Catherine Weis; Commercial--Johanna Faber; Freshman--Helen Deinlein. At Sunset and Locust, three different elevations within a few hundred feet of each other show 38.5 feet, 40 and 41.3 feet whereas, Crow Island Park slightly North and West runs up to 43 feet.
