' & Hubbard Woods Pupils Present Christmas Play "The Christmas Spirit," a Christmas ritual presented each year by children of the Hubbard Woods school, will be given next Wednesday afternoon at 1:45 o'clock in the school auditorium. This non-sectarian ritual, expressing the spirit of Christmas giving and us- ing a number of Christmas carols, has become a tradition in the school. Sim- ple and impressive, its beauty has be- come such a delight to children and teachers that all were unanimous in choosing to present it again this sea- son. Parents are invited to attend. A summary of the ritual is as fol- lows: The spirit of the tree has come from the forest. She tells the great dreams of the trees. Her own dream is that her tree shall become a Christ- mas tree and that she shall be trans- formed from a Dryad into the Christ- mas spirit. This may only come about through great gifts. She calls upon the Century to send its choicest gifts to the tree. The Spirits of Red Cross, Scouting, Campfire and Service bring their ideals to the tree. These gifts are so great that the chimes ring and the star appears at the top of the tree. A Christmas spirit creeps into the Dryad's heart and she becomes the Christmas Spirit. Though the branches of her tree tremble with unborn light, the mir- acle is not yet complete. She calls upon the children to bring their simple gifts, each of which is to make someone's Christmas bright. They carol as they lay their offerings at the foot of the tree. The children's gifts cause lights to flash out at inter- vals on the tree, thus completing the miracle. Thanks are expressed in song and all go their way caroling haonily. The cast of characters will be: The Soirit of the Tree, afterwards the Christmas Spirit, Jane Edwards; Spirit of Red Cross, Jean Dorothy Jacobs: Soirits of Scoutine, Phillip Ogen and Bettv Barr: Spirit of Camp- fire, Tane Sweet: Spirit of Service, Bill Paulson: and procession of gift bearers and carols, children of the school. Charles Pick, Father of Albert Pick, Passes Away Private rites for Charles Pick who passed away at his residence in the North Shore hotel last Tuesday from injuries received when struck by an automobile in front of the hotel, were held from the home of his son on Thursday. Interment was at Rosehill cemetery. Mr. Pick, who was 82 years of age, is survived by his three sons, Albert, 445 Sheridan road, Winnetka, retiring head of the restaurant and hotel sup- ply firm of Chicago which bears his name, Joseph Pick of Omaha, Neb. and Hugh Pick of Winnetka, and one daughter, Mrs. Max I. Brede, of St. Petersburg, Fla. William B. Baxter, driver of the car which struck Mr. Pick and residing at 1512 Pitner avenue, Evanston, is being held on a charge of manslaugh- ter pending the action of a coroner's jury. Skokie Punils Plan for - School Christmas Program Children of the Skokie school are planning a Christmas program in the form of carols and songs representing Christmas. The songs will be selected ballads sung mostly by the boys' and girls' treble glee clubs under the di- rection of Lawrence Yingling, musical director. Occasionally, however, the general assembly will join in on well known Christmas carols. Some form of program is presented each year at the school, taking the form of either a musical or dramatic presentation.
