December 17, 1927 WINNETKA TALK Suburbs Indicate Building Advance During November Chicago suburbs in the forty mile area adjacent to the city did a No- vember building construction volume of more than $11,000,000, according to es- timates prepared by S. W. Straus and company. This figure is based on offi- cial permit figures from twenty-seven principal suburban cities and towns. Actual figures for the twenty-seven towns reporting showed a volume of $7,859,780 as against $7,696,856 in No- vember a year ago, or a gain of 2 per cent, While seasonal decreases are evi- dent, the huge volume built up earlier in the year in some of these suburbs makes the record ahead of last year. A loss of 2 per cent is apparent as against October this year, however. The figures show the prosperity of the suburbs and the tremendous vol- ume of suburban home building dur- ing 1927, indicating the tendency of city residents to accept suburban liv- ing as made possible through improved transportation. Wilmette's total for November was $185,319, Winnetka, $320,650, and Glen- coe, $266,150, according to the Straus report. : } Electric light and power customers in Illinois outnumber the populations of 22 states. Christian Science Churches "God the Preserver of Man" was the subject of the Lesson-Sermon in all Churches of Christ, Scientist, Sunday, December 11 The Golden Text was from Psalms 84:11, "The Lord God is a sun and shield: the Lord will give grace and glory: no good thing will He withhold from them that walk uprightly." Among the citations which com- prised the Lesson-Sermon was the fol- lowing from the Bible: Consider the lilies how they grow: they toil not, they spin not; and yet I say unto you, that Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these . .. And seek not ye what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink, neither be ye of doubtful mind. For all these things do the na- tions of the world seek after: and your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things. But rather seek ye the kingdom of God; and all these things shall be added unto you" (Luke 12-27, 29-31). The Lesson-Sermon also included the following passages from the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," by Mary Baker Eddy: "When Christ changes a belief of sin or of sickness into a bet- ter belief, then belief melts into spiritual understanding, and sin, disease, and death disappear. Christ, Truth, gives mortals temporary food and clothing until the material, trans- formed with the ideal, disappears, and man is clothed and fed spiritually" (p. 442). .
