December 17, 1927 WINNETKA TALK -- Country Day Starts Christmas Holidays; Pupils Assist Santa Christmas holidays at the North Shore Country Day school, Winnetka, began Wednesday. The celebration of Christmas at the school took the form of a Santa Claus party, on Thursday, and the presentation of the nativity play on Friday. For the past two weeks the school has been turned into a workshop for Santa Claus, where the children have been repairing old toys and making new ones, which were presented to Santa Claus when he came to the Christmas party on Thursday morn- ing. The party was in the nature of an old-fashioned Christmas, with the cus- tom of bringing in the Yule log, and with games, in which all grades and all ages took part. At twilight time, on Friday after- noon, the Christmas play was present- ed in the school auditorium. The play was fitted into a very beautiful Christ- mas carol service, sung by the differ- ent classes and by special carol choirs. The play was written and acted by the children of the eighth grade. Tt was based on the story of the wise men, the Greek, the Babylonian, and the Egyptian, who were dissatisfied with their world as they found it, and who were looking for a new power for justice in the world. William D. Sidley son of Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Sidley of 739 Humboldt avenue, will return shortly after Christmas from a trip to Mexico. He left the latter part of October, and on December 3, his wife joined him. His two children are with his mother. --Q-- Mrs. A. Lynne, formerly of Win- netka, who is now residing at the Georgian hotel, will leave next Sunday for Florida. Wally's Golf Hints Editor's Note: Following is the sixth of a series of golf lessons written by Wally Chamberlain, professional at Glencoe Golf course, and head of the North Shore Golf School, Winnetka, in which, from week to week will be pre- sented many helpful hints for those who are just taking up the game of golf, as well as those who have been playing for some time but admit the need for improving their game. One way which can be used to keep the left side up is to turn the left hand a little bit to the right in the back swing. Not a roll, but just enough to put the left hand over the right at the top of the back swing. This will automatically force the right elbow down and also will help to keep the left side up. It is a simple matter when you are in this position at the top of your swing to come from the inside with an underhand throw with the right hand. Do not go too far over with the left hand or you will be flat, which is not necessary. Just experiment until you find just the amount you need to keep your left shoulder up and work at it until it stays up without any effort. You will find then you can swing almost any way and still keep your shoulders level. Begin Play in Girls' Basketball Tournament The first basketball games in the new tournament of the girls' basket- ball league at New Trier were played Tuesday, December 13. A new system is being employed this year. Instead of holding practice until after Christ- mas, and then choosing class teams to compete in the interclass tournament, applicants were assigned to teams which will meet in class tournaments, after which class teams will be chosen to continue tournament play.
