December 24, 1927 WINNETKA TALK 13 GIVE XMAS PAGEANT Kenilworth Union Church Group Pre- sents "Why the Chimes Rang" as Holiday Gift to Parish Wednesday evening of this week a Christmas pageant was presented at the Union church of Kenilworth under the direction of Miss Virginia Marshall, Miss Helen Little, and Miss Bernice Bully, It was in the form of a pan- tomime entitled "Why the Chimes Rang," and carried with it a beautiful lesson of the spirit of true and sincere giving, The story opened with a street scene. An old man approached the cathedral with a group of followers to whom he related a story of the chimes, telling his listeners that the Christmas chimes only ring when God is pleased with the giver and with great regret told them that the chimes had been silent for vears., He passed on into the church, The second picture or scene presented Pedro, a small boy, and his younger brother. They were on their way to church with their tiny offering for Christmas and as they passed along they saw an old woman crouched or fallen near the wall, and they realized that she would die if one or the other of them did not stay until help could be found. So Pedro pleaded with his brother to go on to the church and he himself stayed behind with the dying woman. As Pedro stopped beside her and the smaller boy went into church, chorals were heard, and as they came down the aisle they were met by a violinist and together they sang and played "Joy to the World," as they entered the cathedral. Then the scene changed and we saw the rich parishioners going to offer gifts to the church, rich and poor, young and old, and the last to come the king. As the king approached the altar he removes his crown and lays it before the Madonna. All ears listen for the chimes but there was no sound from the bells.
