18 WINNETKA TALK December 24, 1927 Societys Younger Set Now Is Engaged in Holiday Gaiety Coming Week Finds Many Affairs on Social Calendar BY JEAN TEN BROECK The day is near at hand that shops in holiday garb, that postmen laden with cards bearing messages of good will, and that evergreen trees, cut and ready, their spicy fragrance enhanced by sun and by dampness, have been foretelling. Everyone knows what is uppermost in everyone's thoughts dur- ing the days that precede and that follow Christmas, and near the top in importance are the affairs for the young members of north shore society. Some of these now are past, but as a reminder, we make a social calendar of those in the week to come. A dancing club, which includes most- ly among its members young people in the tenth grade at the North Shore Country Day school, will be entertain- ed at a dinner dance given Tuesday evening by Mrs. H. Spaulding Coffin of 33 Locust road in honor of her daughter, Elinor, and December 29 these same young people will go to the James Prindiville home at 717 Rose- wood avenue for dinner, and then on to the Dudley C. Palmer residence at 655 Elm street, for dancing. This evening, too, a group of Wil- mette girls, is giving a dance at Skokie Country club. The hostesses include the Misses Dorcas Branson, Jane Burrill, Edwina Cadmus, Helen Gates, Janet Hall, Jane Moist, Jean Snell, Marion Suits, and Jane Wilson. Mr. and Mrs. Allen I. Withers of 788 Lincoln avenue are giving a tea dance at Indian Hill club from 4 until 7 next Wednesday for the boarding school and college crowd in honor of their daughter, Miss Leila. Invitations are also out for a dance to be given the same evening at the Evanston Woman's club by a group of boys, including James L. Alder, John P. Booth, Jr, Carl Carlson, Stephen Harwood, John H. Leach, Samuel H. Moore, Jr., Preston Read, Stoddard J. Small, Linus O. Smith, J. Dean Vail, Ir Four Wilmette girls, Effie James, Sally Clark, Jane Springer, and Vir- ginia Hansen are giving a dance at the Wilmette Woman's club for 150 of their friends Wednesday evening. Mrs. Frederick C. Honnold of 457 Ash street, Winnetka, - is giving a luncheon and matinee party for her daughter, Virginia, on December' 28. The guests will include "about twenty of Virginia's classmates at the North Shore Country Day school. After luncheon at the Drake, Mrs. Honnold will take her guests to see Fred Stone in "Criss Cross." A group of nine New Trier boys has issued invitations for a dance on De- cember 28, at Shawnee Country club. About 600 invitations were sent out. The hosts are: Robert Cochran, Frank Gilchrist, Henrv Huttman, John Iliff, Wallace Miller, George Pattison, Thomas Sellery, Stanley Smith, and Raymond Sullivan. Miss Jeanne and Miss Katharine Street, who will be given a tea dance next Saturday by their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry L. Street of 592 Sheri- dan road, were honored with a dinner party given for them last evening by their grandmother, Mrs. Charles A. Street of 1429 Astor street, Chicago. The dinner preceded the dance given at the Fortnightly by Mr. and Mrs. Homer L. Dixon and Mr. and Mrs. Edwin P. Dewes. Scott of 175 Sheridan road, Hubbard Woods, have announced the engagement of their daughter, Isabel, to Albert Keep. Mr. Keep is the son of the late Albert Keep, II; and of Mrs. John P. Wilson of 1516 State parkway, Chicago. He is a graduate of Princeton, where he was a member of the Quadrangle club. Miss. Scott attended Dobbs Ferry. She made her debut two years ago and has been active in the younger social set since then. The wedding date has not been set. Mrs. E. B. Metzel, 307 Cumberland road, Kenilworth, entertained at a luncheon and bridge at her home last Friday. Betrothed Mr, and Mrs. Arlan W. Converse of 396 Hawthorn lane announce the en- gagement of their daughter, Marcia Burnham, to Donald Olin Cady of Meriden, Conn., son of Mrs. H. Olin Cady of Evanston. Miss Converse is a member of the senior class at North- western university, and Mr. Cady was graduated in the class of 1926. The formal announcement of the engage- ment was made at a luncheon and bridge given on Tuesday at the home of Miss Converse. This party is an annual affair, but it to than ever this year, so many people having promises be more attractive offered to donate their services toward the entertainment. Samuel C. Meyers of the Teatro del Lago is donating the use of a film and a moving picture machine, also the services of an opera- tor to run it. Miss Marion Keeney will dance in costume. Peggy Brooks will also dance, and Mrs. Ernst von Ammon will sing. The candy has been donated by Horace Armstrong and is to be packed in boxes donated by Mrs. Morris Wilson. Each child and mother will receive one of these and also the gift of a handkerchief. These handker- chiefs have been given by Mrs. Ralph Hobart, Mrs. Edward Welles, and some other members of the Winnetka board. Mrs. Harve Badgerow is the chair- man of the committee in charge of the afternoon, and it is through her efforts that the program is to be so attractive and the donations so numerous. This annual Christmas party has always proved a most satisfactory con- tact between the mothers, who bring their children to the station, and the board members, who collect the money which makes this clinic possible. Engagement Announced at Afternoon Bridge The engagement of Miss Lida Ray- mond, daughter of Mrs. Lillian E. Ray- mond of Winnetka, to Harry Mayhew of Waukegan, son of Mrs. A. E. May- hew of Los Angeles, was announced at a bridge party given by Mrs. Ray- mond at her home, 874 Willow road, December 10. The wedding date is in- definite. Miss Raymond is a graduate of Northwestern university in the class of 1925, and is a member of Alpha Phi sorority. Mr. Mayhew graduated from the University of Illinois, and is a Sigma Chi. Mrs. Donald W. Mercer of 37 Indi- an Hill road, is a sister of Miss Ray- mond, who with her family, moved to Winnetka from Evanston last autumn. Mr. Mayhew's family lived in Evanston some years ago and at present he has relatives residing there. Five Generations Will Attend Family Reunion The birth Sunday morning of F. Langdon Hubbard, Jr. son of the F. Langdon Hubbards of Detroit, Mich., formed the fifth living generation of a family that is prominent on the north shore. The baby's mother was, before her marriage, Miss Emily Scott of Hubbard Woods. His grandmother is Mrs. Frederick H. Scott of 175 Sheridan road, Hubbard Woods. His great-grandmother is Mrs. Robert Cluett of 1147 Sheridan road, Winnet- ka, and his great-great-grandmother is Mrs, Francis M. Winne of 1138 Hin- man avenue, Evanston. On Mrs. Winne's one hundredth birthday, which falls January 8, a large family reunion will be held to celebrate both the birthday and the coming of the fifth generation.
