IN PLAY NEXT WEEK Repertory Company of Famous Gotham Dramatic Organiza- tion at Winnetka Dec. 28 Seldom do Chicago playgoers have the opportunity to see such a well- balanced cast of notable artists as those assembled in the Repertory com- pany of the New York Theater Guild, for their presentation of Bernard Shaw's "Arms and the Man" at the Jane Kuppenheimer Memorial hall, Skokie school, Winnetka, Wednesday, December 28. as With the Guild, described by critics as "the most interesting theater organ- ization in the English-speaking world," the play and the players are of most importance. This is in contrast to the practice of starring individuals, so prevalent among commercial managers. George Gaul, who will take the lead- ing part, has a large number of past successes to his credit. Last season he played the leading male role in John Golden's sensational drama, "Seventh Heaven," during a year-long run in New York. His work in "Kismet" with Otis Skinner, brought him other laurels. The present tour of the Theater Guild is the first occasion on which Gaul has been absent from New York during the theatrical season. Popular Young Star In the principal woman's role, of Raina, is Florence Eldridge, generally regarded as one of the best of the younger actresses. She is a beautiful and talented performer whose great- est success was in the famous Guild production, "Ambush." The Guild has been forunate in se- curing for the present tour Molly Pearson, the originator of the role of "Bunty" in the delightful Scotch com- edy, "Bunty Pulls the -Strings." As a character woman, she has few peers. Also to be seen in "Arms and the Man" will be Erskine Sanford, the original Mr. Pim in A. A. Milne's comedy, "Mr. Pim Passes By," now being revived by Mrs. Insull's reper- tory company at the Studebaker. Frederic March needs no introduc- tion to Chicago, since his outstanding performance in "Tarnish" at the Play- house a season or two ago. March was David Belasco's discovery, and por- trayed the difficult role of Victor Hugo in the great director's production of "Deberau." He is one of the most Bromising young men on the stage to- ay. Other regular members of the Theater Guild appearing in "Arms and the Man" are Dorothy Fletcher, Hor- tense Alden and Leonard Loan. Under Guild Direction The entire production, players, scen- ery, direction and all, is the work of Controversy Over Permit Prompts Change in Code The controversy over the location of an oil filling station at Scott and Linden avenues, Hubbard Woods, will have resulted in one thing, if nothing else is accomplished, and that will be the placing of an ordinance on the village books really defining such an institution as an oil filling station and providing that they shall be, in the future, located in sections of the vil- lage zoned as "D" Industrial. The ordinance was introduced at the last meeting of the village council, Tuesday evening, by Trustee Doris D. Benson, chairman of the plats and zon- ing committee, and a public hearing on the same has been set for Monday evening, January 9, at 9 o'clock, at the council chamber. The village, at present, has no ordinance defining a filling station, and heretofore they have been located in various sections of the village, as per- mitted by the authorities. Recently the Pennsylvania Oil com- pany was denied a permit for a fill- ing station at Scott and Linden ave- nues, on a lot which the company purchased and which is located in an area zoned "C" Commercial. Organized objection was made by adjacent resident property owners; various hearings resulted; Village At- torney Frederick Dickinson advised that the petition be denied: the Penn- sylvania Oil company, it is reported, will take the case into court, and the village council, by its new ordinance, will solve, once and for all, future questions of this nature, at least. Prepare Cost Estimate on Relaying Sidewalk Preparation of an estimate for re- laying a sidewalk at the northeast cor- ner of Provident avenue and Ash street was authorized by the board of local improvements, Tuesday evening. The present walk is below grade, it was reported, and in times of rain and thaw, is flooded. the New York Theater guild. It is not the Theater Guild Acting company that was recently featured at a Chicago playhouse. In bringing "Arms and the Man" to this vicinity, the North Shore Theater guild adds another signal achievement to its past ambitious record of afford- ing local audiences the very best in little theater entertainment. The of- ficers of the North Shore Theater guild believe that perhaps the present program may initiate a series of reg- ular annual performances that will be highly relished by North Shore audi- ences.
